About the Book

Never forget…

In September 2001, Tris Miles faces difficult choices. As Chief Pilot of Westin Charter Company, she’s mentoring Jannat, a brash young captain with limitless potential and a shocking secret. An offer to summit the peak of the pilot pyramid entices Tris to quit her job, but an old nemesis stands in her way.

Meanwhile, Tris juggles the men in her personal life. A friend-with-benefits pushes for commitment. An ex-boyfriend returns, still in love with her. Unexpectedly, Tris develops new feelings for someone who is already dear to her.

On September 11th, Tris and her crew depart Edinburgh for the United States. Just feet off the ground, they are mysteriously ordered back to the airport where they learn of a deadly terrorist attack on U.S. soil—using airplanes as bombs.

When Tris discovers that her best friend was a passenger on one of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center, her world is shattered.

With a broken heart and her entire life up in the air, Tris doesn’t know where to turn. Can she find the courage to navigate her way home?

About the Book

Set over the course of six decades, A Lion in the Grass documents the despair and hope of a spy who suffers the murder of friends and enjoys the success of mentoring protégés.

The story is told through alternative viewpoints of Raymond, his protégés, and the French villain. The novel digs deeply into questions of love, self-doubt and hatred, all foisted upon Raymond during a career from which, he discovers, it is impossible to retire.

My Review

You will find a historical life adventure detailed in Raymond's stories. Raymond's stories shared through A Lion in the Grass take readers through time in an around-the-world experience detailing decades of his life as a man and a spy. As the main character moves from mission to mission, country to country, and life stage to life stage, the storylines introduce a host of characters--some for a brief period, some for a lifetime--that all play roles in the development of Raymond Hatcher. The author presents Raymond's story in historically placed settings with enough detail to transport the reader--but enough mystery to sometimes tread the unknown with his characters.

A Lion in the Grass is a Life Story. I am not always a huge fan of military spy novels and international thrillers--but this novel was undoubtedly the exception. A Lion in the Grass is a story of relationships, friendships, loyalty, and life--some developed during spy missions--some formed and strengthened through loss. This story's heart is the characters, glimpses of human nature, and experiences. While revenge is certainly a theme of the novel--it is done in a tasteful way that fits the characters and their lives.

Would I Recommend A Lion in the Grass? This novel was an unexpected page-turner that I couldn't put down. While the book is not based on non-stop action scenes--there is a non-stop life story playing out day by day--decade by decade--that is impossible to set aside. The novel is built at times on coincidences driving the plot and was a little vague and confusing from time to time--but these elements fit the nature of Raymond's mysterious life story as a spy. If you enjoy historical fiction and memoirs--with some spy thriller dramas--this novel is a blend that works well. It keeps you drawn to the story at hand and attached enough to the characters and lives to move on to the next book!

About the Book

There comes a moment in everyone’s life when everything finally makes sense. You know that where you are is exactly where you’re supposed to be.

It’s 11:59, and Rob Jackson is reflecting on his life - the domino effect that each event had on the next throughout the years of his life. During his childhood in a small town in Mississippi, he learned how it feels to be an outsider, and the love for his mother, books, fishing, and his grandmother, are what kept him full of hope.

Although Jackson strives to build a relationship with his biological father, the constant search for his approval only results in heartbreak and tragedy.

Throughout this journey, he discovers nothing is ever as it seems. He tries to overcome his bitterness, loneliness, and disappointments, with the help of the women he meets along the way. Octavia, a mentor and guide, Dolores, a friend and partner, and then Nora, the woman he believes to be his soulmate.

When the final domino falls, Jackson is staring at the clock, with time being his ultimate nemesis.

Two Roads to Paradise Book Review & Book Tour Giveaway

This morning, I have an adult fiction novel with a dystopian/science fiction style theme in our book review spotlight!  Check out Two Roads to Paradise from the Be Careful What you Wish For series, learn about the book & authors Gordon Jensen with  Cara Highsmith & Gordon Thomas, read my thoughts on the book & be sure to enter for a chance to win a prize in the book tour giveaway at the end of this post!  Also, if you missed it, you can check out my review of The Way Out--Book One from this series too!

Book TitleTwo Roads to Paradise (Book 2: Be Careful What You Wish for Series) by Gordon Jensen with Cara Highsmith and Gordon Thomas
Category:  Adult Fiction (18+),  324 pages
GenreSci-Fi
Publisher:  Highsmith Creative Services
Release date:  May 2022
Content Rating:  PG-13 +M. The language is pretty tame, but there are a few swear words. The bigger issue is some of the topics addressed in it.

About the Book

Although the reappearance of the Alpha Centauri I crew was miraculous, it was not the celebratory homecoming they expected. Their return to a world reeling from a pandemic that wiped out more than half the population thrust them right into the center of controversy and conflict. Now, three years later, though the tide has turned and the survival of the human race seems to be secure, the survival of human relations is far less certain. The cure should have been the injection of hope the world needed to restore balance and end the chaos of the last four decades. Instead, the complex implications for personal rights and freedom have fractured the North American territory in such a way that the division may never be repaired. As the crew dispersed to find their place in this new landscape, Hunter Young found himself embedded in the Marshall administration as an agent for the mysterious K Group. What had been a relatively uneventful assignment suddenly becomes a whirlwind of adventure as he is called to a rendezvous that requires a long and circuitous journey.

My Review

Readers should read the series in order. While you could read the first book without needing to continue the series--you should read that first book first to help ease into this second book. Two Roads to Paradise introduces some new characters and follows different roads and political perspectives as the world continues with the changes and developments from book one.

Two Roads to Paradise continues the series' political storyline. While the premise of the novel and the series holds science fiction and dystopian elements as the characters move through their journeys in the post-pandemic aftermath, it is even far more political and social in theme than the first book. Red and Blue (Republican and Democrat) views and ideas serve as the focus--but the writing style did lend to the presentation of both viewpoints from different characters and encounter perspectives.

Would I Recommend Two Roads to Paradise?   If you enjoy political novels developed via a fantasy world that mirrors current reality--this novel may suit you well. I found this novel a bit slower-paced than the first--and more political than I had realized it would be. Having said that, I did find the presentation of different political views interesting, and the dystopian novel fan in me enjoyed watching the characters rebuild lives and regroup amid the changes.

About the Book

When the Alpha Centauri crew returns to earth after a failed mission to explore a distant planet, they quickly learn the world is not how they left it.

Under new global leadership, the planet has managed to go decades without conflict, except for one major problem. Thanks to a pandemic caused by a mutation in a new strain of GMO corn, the world’s population plummeted to 2.6 billion, wiping out a disproportionate amount of men and leaving the globe run almost entirely by women. The mutation altered the human DNA, making it impossible to produce male babies and increasing Y-chromosome related diseases.

Because of their lack of exposure, the Alpha Centauri crew, especially the men on board, now find themselves in high demand. The Powers that Be think they are the solution, but with that solution comes the inevitable hunger for power and control. As greed, self-interest, and corruption rear their ugly heads, a planet that had found its way to peace is thrust into turmoil once again.

So, the question becomes: Are they really the answer to a seemingly unsolvable problem? The world may soon come to understand that sometimes getting what you wish for isn't the gift you think it will be.

The Way Out is at once a brilliant and relatable work of post-apocalyptic fiction. Think The Handmaid’s Tale mixed with Netflix’s The Wilds, and a touch of Interstellar, the movie. It’s a uniquely told story that will have you waiting as impatiently as the crew to understand the New World Order of the near future.

My Review

Readers will find a Unique Format in The Way Out. The novel is written in almost an interview/ question & answer format at times with a diary log entry feel at others. It took a bit for me to settle into the storytelling style. Generally, I prefer written books to audiobooks. However, I think I may have eased into this novel's format better with the audio version. While it did take a bit for me to get into the flow of the story--the structure did allow better delivery of many insights and details as the novel played out.

The Way Out is Less Science Fiction Than Expected. As with many science fiction / save the world style novels--the authors created an oddly realistic, relevant glimpse of the world as it could reasonably become. The Way Out feels more of a political/social look at the authors' fictional world--that (unfortunately) too much mirrors issues and realities of our real world.

Would I Recommend The Way Out?   If you enjoy a novel that takes a science fiction premise and creates something a little more philosophical and political--this novel may suit you well. I did enjoy reading the views and angles that the story took as the situation for the human race was revealed and evolved. It is undoubtedly politically/socially charged--and the political aspects far outweigh the science fiction fantasy aspects of the novel. While this is the first book in the series, it gives readers some resolution, leaving some pieces to pull readers into the second novel.

About the Book

Each man who journeys through life must travel through its season and ultimate lessons. For some, the journey is brief, and their life's light is fleeting. They are like rockets that flare to the heavens, glowing brightly only to go black in the next instant. Still others travel what seem to be an abbreviated journey, missing some of life's seasons, never knowing the agony or the ecstasy of what they have missed. But some live each season, taste each tear, relish each sunrise, and brace themselves against each burst of wind. They have traveled life's highways and finally joined the many pieces of themselves into the whole person they were born to be.

When a man is clearing old files out from his garage, he comes across a folder containing an old manuscript he wrote twenty years previously as part of his recovery therapy. It had served as a catharsis for him to help transition old painful issues from his past. He was still a young man when he wrote the words, and as a senior in his seventies, he begins to reflect on his life s journey. As he reads the old papers, many memories come flooding back. He begins to find that our lives are like pages turning from oneplace in our lives to another, each unique, holding treasures and pains of its own, and each a window to growth, learning, and acceptance of who we are and who we were born to be.

In this novel, the journey begins in the innocence of America in the 1950s. Traveling through hope, a great cause, disenchantment, hopelessness, discovery, and rebirth, the novel also recounts the travel of a generation as they move through time. As you read the pages of this book, you will discover a man perhaps not unlike yourself, seeking knowledge, peace, and faith. Perhaps you, like he, have traveled through the paradigm shift of the twentieth century both in awe and fear of what lies ahead.

Meet the Author

Carl Buccellato was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1942, and is of Italian-American descent. As a young man, he was eager to get out into the world and explore the boundaries of his hometown. Although he had a love for fishing at Coney Island Pier and singing Do Wop on the corners with friends, he knew there was much more of the world to see on the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge. One of his first jobs as a teenager in New York City was working for Western Union as a messenger. It didn't take Carl long to own the streets of the Big Apple. As he went from building to building on his bicycle delivering his envelopes, little did he know what his fate would become years later.

With a lot of hard work, perseverance, and God's grace, a day would come when Carl would become the CEO of a publicly traded company and ink a multimillion-dollar deal in the board room of AIG, then the largest insurance company in America. In his early years, he earned a BA and MBA, married, and started a family. Today, Carl has four children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren carrying on the family legacy.

Through the years, he started several companies and has served on several Boards of Directors, including private and public companies, as well as serving on the Board of Trustees of St. Thomas University. Carl's career has taken him literally all over the world. In the 80s and 90s he was a regular monthly contributor to a BBC broadcast in England. In 1986, Inc. Magazine featured his firm as the 12th fastest growing independent company in America. In 1984, Carl was invited to become a member of the Presidential Council of 100. This group of business leaders advised the President of the United States on several sectors of the economy and business issues. Carl served three different presidents during his time on the council: presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton. Throughout his career and travels, Carl has met a broad array of different people. Some, down on their luck, some at the pinnacle of their careers and personal lives. Many of the people and their stories left a mark on Carl's heart and mind. It is from some of these encounters that Carl has drawn inspiration for a few of the fictitious characters in this novel.

Today, Carl resides in Coral Springs, Florida, with his wife Mary Ellen. She is an award-winning multimedia artist and speaker. Together, Carl and Mary Ellen love traveling the globe and looking for new inspiration for their gifts and talents given to them by their loving God.
