About the Book

A riveting coming of age story, that will make you laugh, cry and root for Laura to find happiness.

Laura Shirk is a normal, happy, go-lucky, little girl playing with Cabbage Patch dolls and Legos. Until she isn’t.

Set in the late 1980s-early 90s, a visit to her aunt and uncle’s house changes everything.  What follows is a nerve-racking story shedding light on child sexual abuse. As the tragedy unfolds, Laura mutters through life concealing her secret from everyone. Feeling alone and isolated, she struggles to navigate her younger years wondering if she can or will ever find happiness.

Then, Laura meets ‘the perfect man’ for her. Can he heal her heart and break down her steel walls?
The Secrets We Conceal, S.R. Fabrico’s debut novel is a riveting coming of age story that beautifully conveys how love and strength can heal all wounds.

My Review

The Secrets We Conceal Offers Readers an Emotional Journey. Child sexual abuse is never an easy, light subject to discuss. A coming of age, healing, and growing-after-trauma story is never an easy, soft subject to read about either. The author tackles both as she shares Laura's childhood story and her emotional life journey through healing and hope. The novel is tough to read at times--and guides readers through every emotion as the characters face the realities of the abuse and the long-term aftermath.

The Realistic Storytelling Grips Readers from Beginning to End. The novel and the characters feel very real. The scenes and the relationships progress through ups and downs and an emotionally charged manner that never feels unreasonable or forced. From the very beginning, readers will be drawn to and moved by Laura's story--hoping for a happy ending and peace for her. The author doesn't offer any surprise plot twists, unrealistic instant relationships, or perfect moments of conclusion or closure. She gives a raw, honest, and hopeful novel that may not give readers the exact ending they want--but does give the finish that Laura's story needs.

Would I Recommend The Secrets We Conceal by S.R. Fabrico? The subject matter of this book and the realistic approach taken by the author make it one that may not be for every reader. It is a painful, complex story and one of strength, hope, and authenticity. The author tells a very visual, emotional story that is well worth the read. The Secrets We Conceal should be on your reading list if you enjoy coming-of-age novels that deal with darker, complex subjects and psychological healing.

About the Book

We were unbreakable.

We were strong, and we were resilient.

Just like the olive tree.

Nisma is like any other 16-year-old. She goes to school, she fights with her brothers, and she loves her grandmother, Nazik. But, life for Nisma isn’t as simple as boys and books: Nisma is an Islamic Palestinian in Israel, and her new friend, Hannah, is a Zionist.

When Hannah’s mother is attacked and Nisma invites the pair to live in her family home, she has no idea of the chain of events that she has set in motion. What unfolds will show Nisma that in a country shrouded by corruption, bigotry and segregation, love and compassion is her best chance at survival.

A love letter to the Palestinian people, Mariam El Houli’s The Olive Tree is a heartbreaking and gripping debut – a tale of friendship, strength and loss, and the fatal consequences systematic prejudice can have on a country’s people.

About the Book

When all has been lost, we find ourselves…

Out of the ashes of destruction, a new world has arisen. The plagues of the past—the worship of greed and pursuit of power—are gone. Now, the communities that remain in this post-apocalyptic world focus on creating connections, on forging futures filled with family and love. And all with the help of hard work, hope… and a little bit of magic.

Artist Matthew Sugiyama knows this well. Traveling the countryside in search of the family he lost as a child, he trades his art for supplies—and uses his honed magic to re-draw the boundaries of reality, to fashion a world that is better for those he meets.

Following glimpses of visions half-seen, Matthew—and the friends he encounters along the way—will travel a path from light to darkness and back again. A road where things lost in the past can only be found in the love of the present, and the hope for the future.

And he will travel this path wherever it leads. From joy to sorrow, from tears to laughter. Because Matthew is the Elemental Artist, and he knows that though dangers arise, humanity will always triumph… in a world he has painted in shades of Oil and Dust.

About the Book

In 1846 Alta California, Catalina Delgado daydreams about her future: roping cattle, marrying Angelo Ortega and raising children. But now, invaders from the United States-the Bear Flaggers-have declared war against Mexico, her country. Bear Flaggers have imprisoned one close friend of her family and murdered others. What fate might befall her parents, grandfather and younger brothers? And what about her best friend, a Costanoan servant girl? How can Catalina, only sixteen, help protect all those she loves?

An old vaquero once predicted a mysterious Spirit Man would someday ride off with Catalina. This has clouded her reputation as a chaste young woman, one reason why Angelo's father doesn't want her for a future daughter-in-law. Now Catalina learns another reason. Her mamá is not her natural mother. Catalina is a mestiza, the daughter of her papi and a former servant woman.

Catalina prays for guidance, then dares to leave her bedroom at night to seek a spiritual vision. She ends up riding into the sky with Spirit Man. They remove gold nuggets from a river to prevent Bear Flaggers or anyone else from discovering the treasure. Will this be Catalina's duty for the rest of her life? And is Spirit Man good or evil?

For the sake of all she holds dear, Catalina risks what is left of her reputation, her future with Angelo, her life and her very soul. When hopes and dreams clash with cold reality, Catalina finds the fortitude to accomplish what only she can do.

For the sake of all she holds dear, Catalina risks what is left of her reputation, her future with Angelo, her life and her very soul. When hopes and dreams clash with cold reality, Catalina finds the fortitude to accomplish what only she can do.

From Chapter Six:

A horse with a lofty gallop races beside mine, as if he charges into battle. This animal is larger than Fandango, over a full hand higher, and black as obsidian. I blink over and over. My eyes water. An abundant ebony mane flows over the horse’s arched neck. The forelock whips between well-placed ears. Madre de Dios. This horse is no common mustang, no Spanish barb. It is an Andalusian, like the one in the prophecy.

A man leans out of the Andalusian’s saddle, his arm stretched out. The wind billows his white sleeve. Fingers hidden by short, black leather gloves grab Fandango’s reins. His exposed wrists are as pale as those of the dead.

About the Book

How did the first Americans end up last in America?

From Dog to Wolf is the story of Daniel Graywolf, an Oglala Lakota teen struggling to survive on the impoverished Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Shy and a loner, young Daniel escapes the drama of life there by wandering the creek beds and washed-out roads in search of specimens for his rock collection; a practice that has earned him the regrettable nickname "Rock Dog." One day he meets Dr. Robert Timberland, a geology professor from the nearby university. Together they solve the mystery of an important find Daniel has made while searching ancestral lands near the reservation. With the help and wisdom of tribal elders, they devise a plan that brings about the long-deserved restitution for his Sioux ancestors. To succeed will require considerably more of Daniel than just human resolve.

Months later, they meet at a bookstore. Fascinated by his stories and adventurous spirit, Luna goes on a Peace Corps stint to a rural rice-growing village in Cambodia.
