Cozy Mystery Review Spotlight: A Felonious Finale by C.S. McDonald

I love cozy mysteries! Today, I have a book from on my favorite cozy mystery writers! Check out A Felonious Finale by C.S. McDonald, read my review of the book and learn about the series and author.

Book Title:   A FELONIOUS FINALE (The Owl's Nest Mysteries)
Author:  C.S. McDonald
Category:  Adult Fiction, 268 pages
Genre:  Cozy Mystery
Publisher:  McWriter Books
Release date:  April 2023
Tour dates:  Nov 6 to Dec 8
Content Rating:  G. C.S. McDonald's books are appropriate for YA readers as well as adults--no bad language or sexual content.

About the Book

Alexa Owl has one burning question: Who killed Bobby Starr?

Out of the blue that ornery angel, Detective Bobby Starr, shows up at The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe. Much to Alexa Owl’s surprise, Bobby doesn’t need her help. Rather, he’s brought along someone else who wants to qualify for Saint Peter’s Guardian Angel Squad. Saint Pete has delegated this new inductee to solve a murder to get into the group, and it’s a doozie: Who killed Detective Bobby Starr? How can Alexa turn this assignment down?

Back in the 60s, Bobby’s fifth wife, Katherine was a diva in a community operetta company. During a performance of The Merry Widow, Bobby was forced to stand-in for a member of the chorus who fell ill. Only, Bobby’s first performance would be his last! The suspects are hitting all the notes as this mystery comes to crescendo!

My Review

A Felonious Finale is a Great Addition to the Series. I love The Owl's Nest Mysteries. Over the past few years, I have read several books from the author and this series. They are all fun, young adult-friendly, cozy mysteries that are clean, entertaining, and easy to read. A Felonious Finale is another fun, time-travel-style mystery with twists and turns and humorous interactions and surprises for readers.

A Felonious Finale Brings Together Another Cast of Likable, Interesting Characters. I love the unique cast of characters that the author uses in her stories. If you have read previous books in the series, you will find old favorites like Bobby Starr and Winnie and old characters like Clifton Slater shifting into new, central roles. Personally, I think I like Slater's mystery-solving style and personality a little more than Bobby's--but both characters offer humor and perspective to their roles.

Would I Recommend A Felonious Finale by C.S. McDonald? If you enjoy a clean, cozy mystery that combines a well-done mystery with some unique, paranormal, time-traveling twists--this is another excellent book from C.S. McDonald. Even if you are new to the series, the author gives you enough backstories and history to settle quickly into the story and enjoy it from beginning to end. This mystery is simple but has enough twists and surprises to make it engaging enough for cozy, mystery-loving adults and tweens or teens. While this novel is a "finale," of sorts in some respects,  I love these characters so much that I hope to see more of them in the future!

Mystery Review: The Prime Suspect by Lauren Carr

I love mysteries.  I am pretty sure I say that at least once a week!  Growing up, my grandparents and I read every mystery in my small town library from juvenile fiction to adult--and watched every mystery themed television show available.  Today, I still love finding mystery authors and new mystery series to share. If you have read many of my reviews, you know that I love mystery writer Lauren Carr--and I have read at least a few books from all of her mystery series.  Today, I have a new novel to share from her latest series!  Check out The Prime Suspect, learn about the author, read my thoughts on the book and enter for a chance to win a prize in the book tour giveaway at the end of this post!

Book Title The Prime Suspect (A Sam MacKade PI Mystery) by Lauren Carr
Category:  Adult Fiction (18 +), 430 pages
Genre:  Mystery
Publisher:  Acorn Book Services
Release date:   Oct 26, 2023
Content Rating:  PG-13 (Lauren Carr's books are murder mysteries, so there are murders involved. Occasionally, a murder will happen on stage. There is sexual content, but always behind closed doors. Some mild swearing (a hell or a damn few and far between). No F-bombs!

"The plot is twisted. The characters are full of depth, with many hiding secrets. Mackade's two dogs and Greyson's cat are not only smart, but have attitude with a capital A.  I don't want to spoil anything, so all I am going to say is the cat is the hero who deals with one personal threat."  Marilyn R. Wilson, Author, Speaker, Book Reviewer, review of THE PRIME SUSPECT

"Lauren Carr is among my favorite mystery writers. She knows how to write a fun tale while keeping readers engaged. ..." - Amy Campbell, Locks Hooks and Books

"I am, bottom line, amazed at the giant step that places Carr comparable to significant authors whose name slips off our tongues like, for instance, Nora Roberts. Watch this author--she's moving quickly to where her goals are headed..." - review by Glenda Bixler, Book Readers Heaven

Lauren Carr is a master storyteller who combines the humor of Janet Evanovich and the investigative skills of Patricia Cornwell. She is always at the top of my reading list." - review by Sherry Fundin, Fundinmental, As Eye See It

To solve two murders, the former police K-9 officer and his canine partners must sift through the clues and the lies to reveal the true prime suspect.

My Review

The Prime Suspect Brings Twists, Turns, and Surprises Throughout. I have said it before, and this series opener is no exception: I love Lauren Carr's mystery writing style. Readers should expect the unexpected--with twists and turns, extra murders, and revealed secrets dotting the mystery-solving adventure. While this novel is a long one, it holds plenty of fast-paced murder mystery action and engaging scenes and dialogue to maintain interest from beginning to end.

Readers will Find Wonderful Characters in this Novel. As with all of Lauren Carr's novels, this one begins with a pretty long cast of characters to help readers keep everyone in line in their minds as they read. Since this is the first novel in the series, I didn't really find that I needed to reference the cast list. I will admit, I was actually a bit glad that I didn't notice characters from the author's other books this time--it was nice to begin a series at the beginning and meet an all-new cast! I also found an immediate attachment to the series' main character (and his dogs) that kept me smiling and interested from the second he was introduced. This book is the perfect cozy mystery for dog and cat lovers as the author gives her canine and feline characters quite human-like qualities and "dialogue" throughout.

Would I Recommend The Prime Suspect by Lauren Carr? If you enjoy well-developed cozy mysteries with engaging characters and twists and turns--this new series is a great one for your reading list. This novel was an excellent chance for me to begin a series from the author at the beginning! I enjoyed the characters and the mystery and look forward to following Sam MacKade into future mysteries and adventures.

About the Book

Detective Landry's old flame is drop-dead gorgeous, and so are her paintings!

Pittsburgh’s most influential cultural enthusiasts are overjoyed when famous artist, Vashti, has scheduled a gala followed by a weeklong exhibit of her latest works. On the other hand, Detective Nathan Landry isn’t so excited about the invitation he has received to the gala. Back in the day, he and the renowned painter were lovers. That is, when her name was Sadie Jensen, or as Nathan’s sister liked to call her, “Psycho Sadie.”

Art experts, and collectors alike, have been intrigued by a tiny brush stroke, known as an
invisible stroke. So subtle and out of place is the technique, that Vashti’s elusive stroke has become as famous as a Where’s Waldo search.

Meanwhile, Fiona finds herself captivated by more than Vashti’s flair for the obscure. Rather, she is far more interested in the gorgeous artist and Nathan’s past. Against his wishes, Fiona, her mother, and her mother-in-law attend the exhibit.

Indeed, Vashti’s paintings are killing it in the art world, and in more ways than one.

About the Author

For twenty-six years C.S. McDonald’s life whirled around a song and a dance. Classically trained at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School, The Pittsburgh Dance Alloy, and many others, she became a professional dancer and choreographer. During that time, she choreographed many musicals and an opera for the Pittsburgh Savoyards. In 2011 she retired from her dance career to write. Under her real name, Cindy McDonald, she writes murder-suspense and romantic suspense novels. In 2014 she added the pen name, C.S. McDonald, to write children’s books for her grandchildren. In 2016 she added the Fiona Quinn Mysteries to that expansion. She decided to write the cozy mystery series that everyone, including teens and tweens, can read and enjoy. Presently, the Fiona Quinn Mysteries includes nine books with a tenth slated for 2021. The books are also available on audio, narrated by Maren Swenson Waxenberg.

Cindy’s newest venture is The Owl’s Nest Mysteries. Once again, she has set her cozy mystery in Pittsburgh and the female protagonist, Alexa Owl, is much different from Fiona Quinn. The Owl’s Nest Mysteries has a little grit, a little time travel, a little romance, and a whole lot of cozy!

Ms. McDonald resides on her Thoroughbred farm known as Fly by Night Stables near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Bill, and her poorly behaved Cocker Spaniel, Allister.

I stared at the old woman. She was sitting on a rock in the mouth of a cave in front of us. She gawked at me as she sipped from a bottle of green Gatorade. How had a romantic hike up to the mountain lake taken such a strange turn? She told Han and me that her name was Mnemosyne, but that she was called Nemmy.

Nemmy? Could she be the woman from the stories I’d been told? Was that even possible?

Gaspar, the ghost who’d been telling me tales, had a daughter called Nemmy. She was King Gaspar Reuben’s youngest daughter of three. The one who had been tutored in black magic by an evil crone witch and bestowed with dark powers. She had lived a century ago but had partaken of the rumored fountain of youth found on the sinister island of Gladstone. Was this her? If it was, why did she look so old and frail? And how was she here?

I shivered and took a step closer to Han. He put his arm around my shoulders and the weight of it allowed me to exhale.

We had hiked for hours to reach the alpine lake. It was baffling to find an elderly woman sitting this far up. She didn’t look to be the type who’d be able to climb a set of stairs, let alone a mountain. She had no hiking supplies with her, and she wasn’t dressed for it either, in her long dress that seemed more suited for a carriage ride in the Middle Ages. When I asked her if she had hiked up here by herself, she laughed at my question, saying that no, she didn’t get here by herself, but then she changed the subject. As if that wasn’t crazy enough, she told us her name. I’m almost sure she said Nemmy. Her strange appearance, plus that familiar name, made it possible that she was the witch from the stories the ghost had told.

“You are the recently discovered Caldwell relative who fell through the mirror into Destiny Falls,” she said. It wasn’t a question. It was clear that she knew who I was. “How kind of you to deliver yourself right to my front door. I have something especially for you, Helen.”

“It’s Hayden.” I corrected her automatically.

“Ah, right. Hayden.” She made an effort to stand up but was struggling, so Han and I helped her. As soon as she was upright, she raised her arm and pointed her bony finger inches from my face. With her other hand, she pulled a handful of herbs, dust, and dirt from a pocket and tossed it at me. “Ostend mee-hi virtute!” she shouted.

In a flash, Han tugged me by my arm and pushed me behind him. It was a sweet protective gesture that I appreciated in the face of this deranged old woman.

The woman did a panicky little jig, shook her hands wildly, then grabbed in her pocket for more of the mixture. She tried to throw it around Han and into my face. She repeated what she had just said. Only much more exuberantly. Then she stomped her feet in frustration and repeated loudly, “Virtute! Virtute!”

I coughed at the dust and squinted at her. “What is she doing?” I whispered out of the side of my mouth to Han.

“I have no idea. But it sounds like some kind of spell,” he side-whispered back. “Slowly back away.”

The woman who could be Nemmy rolled her eyes. “I’m not a superhero, but you know I can still hear you,” she whispered back to us out of the side of her mouth.

We both turned to look at her. She laughed heartily and we heard her mumbling, “A spell! What will they think of next?” Then her laughter abruptly stopped. Her face sagged and she growled at us to leave her alone.

What if she was just a random senior citizen and her name a coincidence? Maybe I misunderstood her, and she said her name was Emmy. “Are you sure you don’t want us to wait until your hiking partners come back . . . Emmy?” I asked.

She pursed her lips and shook her head. “Your benevolence is exhausting, young woman, and you’re more than I anticipated. Just leave me in peace.” She waved her arm and turned away from us. “Go! Go away!” she yelled. Then she stepped into the entrance of the cave, leaving us standing there gaping at the cavernous opening.

Han and I gathered up our gear and started the trek back down the mountain.

“Well. That was strange,” I said. “I feel badly about leaving her up here alone, but she was adamant, so what else could we do?”

“That’s true,” Han said. He was quiet for a moment, then he stopped walking and turned to face me. “Hayden, while we were standing at the cave, I experienced flashes of old memories returning.”

My jaw dropped and I waited for him to explain. He’d been in an accident not far from here. He had fallen off a cliff and suffered a concussion that caused him to lose his memory of the accident.

“What did you remember?”

“Random bits and pieces. The cave itself seemed familiar, except the one I recall had a wooden door on the front, which seems unlikely up here on the mountain. The old woman’s voice was familiar. I remembered hearing her say that Lazarus had taken control. But that’s it. It’s so frustrating not to be able to remember. I don’t know who Lazarus is, or what he’d taken control of, or who she was talking to. But the cave and her voice. Those I clearly remember.”

“Han! That’s so much more than you remembered before! Maybe all your memories of that day will start to return now?”

“I hope you’re right. It’s difficult having such a hole in my memory. Especially since what happened goes against all my years of training.”

I already knew that. Han’s position as Destiny Falls Special Forces Officer, and his past work in the U.S. Army’s Special Forces, meant that he would not have ignored all his training and fallen off an obvious cliff.

“If the woman is Nemmy, the witch daughter that Gaspar told me about, maybe she had something to do with your accident?”

“Exactly what I was thinking,” Han said.

I was baffled by our strange encounter and concerned about Han’s returning memory indicating the woman might have something to do with his accident. But if I were being perfectly honest with myself, I was mostly annoyed and frustrated that our first official date had been ruined by her sudden appearance. I’d waited so long for our first date, and it was going perfectly until her presence knocked the romance right out of the moment. We had just had our first kiss in the most romantic fairy tale setting by the waterfall. It felt like more than a kiss. It was the merging of two souls. I was basking in the afterglow of it when her cough had stolen our moment. I took a deep breath and refocused.

There was that name again: Lazarus. His name was mentioned on the list that was imprinted on the back of the letter that my missing mother had written me. There was no explanation. Just a row of question marks after his name. He’d also been mentioned in several stories about the ominous island of Gladstone and the illegal scheme to transport people there so that they could search for the fountain of youth. Based on the bits and pieces I’d heard, Lazarus appeared to be a dangerous human being. Who was this mysterious person, and how was he known by this old woman? This enigma. Possibly the king’s wicked daughter, Nemmy.

Han and I discussed all these questions as we made our way down the mountain. After two hours of this he suggested that we take a break, table our discussion for later, and salvage what we could of our first date. We found a beautiful clearing near a small stream and spread out what was left of our picnic. We even made a plan for our second date. The conversation turned happy and once we settled in, I absorbed every minute with a lightness in my heart.

about the book

Entering their Senior year, the gang believes they left the rough seas behind on their summer cruise. Yet while they were away, seemingly random graffiti spread throughout Asbury. After a talented, young woman goes missing, Maddie, Cornelious, Carly and Pilot wonder if there could be a connection—since the graffiti suddenly stops. Things take a turn for the worse when her body is found a few weeks later, viciously murdered.

Most believe the murderer to be an outsider, until cryptic journal entries and close friends of the young woman point to someone in town. Things only get messier when the local bully (and Pitbulls gang leader) approaches the four sleuths, announcing one of his Pitbulls has gone missing as well. Could his missing Pitbull simply be the murderer on the run?

The deeper they investigate, the foggier everything seems. When Jeremiah Gibbz is arrested for murder, Cornelious is torn between trusting his father or accepting the mounting evidence.

In addition to Jeremiah’s legal troubles, he begins planning a presidential campaign and brings a hopeful future running mate to town…with his family. Among the new family, is beautiful and sly high school Senior, Chelsea Jaminucco—who (with Jeremiah’s blessing) is intent on making Cornelious her own.

Through everything, the gang celebrates their senior year with friends and each other. As scholarships and college loom closer than ever, the foursome find it difficult to focus on the case.

When typical high school problems and slippery interferences crowd the gang’s life, can they find the truth behind Asbury’s gruesome murder? Can they stick together, or will this case be the one that pulls them apart for good?

“WE INTERRUPT THIS BROADCAST FOR BREAKING NEWS!”

The back of the twins’ heads whipped around to face Carly and Pilot so quick, that both teens were shocked to find them injury-free.

Before either Carly or Pilot could react, a photograph of a familiar-looking girl flashed onto the screen. A deeply male voice, seemingly from a sci-fy movie, continued, “This is a missing person’s notice. It has been forty-eight hours since Francesca Cutro was last seen. If anyone has any information regarding Ms. Cutro’s absence, please call the police immediately.”

The message played twice, before returning to its usual programming.

Pilot glanced sideways at Carly to gauge her reaction.

“She looks so familiar, right?”

Pilot thought it over, and felt himself itching to agree. “Yes…but I can’t place her.”

“Well, Cutro…like Evil Janitor Cutro…maybe they’re related.”

“Could be, but I don’t know how that’d help us place her. I mean, it’s not like we know anything about Janitor Cutro—other than he’s a sadist.”

Carly bit her lip, and began twirling her long blonde hair around her finger. Sighing, Pilot stood up and held his hand out to help Carly up.

“Where are we going?” she rose her eyebrows at him questioningly.

“I figured we’d drop the twins off at the Sobrinski’s, then try to find Maddie and Cornelious. You know they’re going to want to investigate.”

Carly exhaled, but readily agreed. Part of her knew this was the next course of action anyway.

“If they don’t already.”

After successfully dropping off the sibling pair at the Sobrinski’s, Pilot and Carly jumped into Cornelious’ car, and sat for a minute. Knowing the boardwalk was closed, the two doubted the duo was up there. Add to the fact that Cornelious didn’t bother driving his car wherever they went, the pair agreed they probably didn’t walk too far.

“Let’s try Split Park. It’s October and the two of them do like being outside in the Fall… looking at the leaves and such,” Pilot suggested.

Carly nodded, pulled Cornelious’ keys out of her pocket and five minutes later, the gang was all together. Seeing as the two had been lounging at the park, talking and daydreaming for about two hours, they hadn’t heard the latest news.

“Wait? Francesca Cutro…she graduated two years ago, right? Got that fancy art scholarship to any college she wanted, but chose to go to the University outside Dublin?”

“How do you remember that stuff?” Cornelious marveled at his girlfriend in awe.

Maddie shrugged, her mind spinning with endless maniacal endings the poor girl could’ve come to. “I like to keep track of people…in case the info comes in handy later.”

“Do we know her otherwise?” Carly asked, voicing the nagging suspicion that she had known or seen the girl before.

“Not that I know of,” Maddie slowly replied, sensing her friend’s dubious thought.

Picking up on the feeling of familiarity that the two girls shared, Cornelious mulled it over as well. “You know, I kind of agree with Carly. I feel like we’ve seen her or know her somehow.”

“It’s on the tip of my tongue, I swear,” Carly dramatically threw her hands up and took a step back.

Right into the Pitbull’s fearless leader.

“I can help you out with the tip of your tongue, if you’d like Cosentino,” JB laughed, causing his minions to join in.

about the author

For as long as she could remember, Kelly Brady Channick loved making up stories, and leaving her listeners/readers on the edge of their seats.

Perhaps that’s why she always managed to talk herself out of trouble...

After graduating from Ocean City High School in NJ, Kelly accepted a basketball scholarship to Holy Family University, in Philadelphia. As a lifelong athlete, Kelly understands the importance of teamwork and overcoming adversity, something she hopes translates into her books.

Before writing page-turners, she taught first, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade — like a dessert menu, she simply had to test them all out. But her favorite job is the one she’s now doing full time: writing. Kelly loves to craft whodunit mysteries, leading readers through various twists and turns filled with red-herrings, hidden clues, and more peculiar characters than a reality show.

Kelly lives in South Jersey with her handsome husband, handful of energetic kids, two cookie-stealing dogs, and an awfully smart cat.

about the book

Can they stick together, or will this case be the one that pulls them apart for good?

about the author
