About the Book

murdered boy. Tortoiseshell eyeglasses. A letter written by a young man to another that reads like a lover's spat. One portable Underwood typewriter. Two confessions.

Will Babe and Manny live or die?

It's the early 1920s and arrogant teenagers Noah "Babe" Lieberman and Roman "Manny" Loewe have it all: money, brains, freedom. They reside in the same affluent Chicago neighborhood, come from successful, respectable families, and enjoy privileged lives. Both are intelligent prodigies who graduated high school early. But Roman, an extrovert, is handsome and popular whereas Noah is average-looking and spends most of his time with birds and books. After meeting, they embark on a wild journey of vandalism, burglary, and arson. Their personal relationship escalates, and their criminal acts morph into more sinister behavior as the two flout the laws of the "common" man and live their version of the Übermensch, or "superman" as defined by Friedrich Nietzsche.

One hundred years ago, the world was stunned to learn that Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb, two wealthy, brilliant university students, had confessed to kidnapping and murdering fourteen-year-old Bobby Franks. Why did Leopold and Loeb do it? For "pure love of excitement, or the imaginary love of thrills, doing something different," they said.

D.L. Scarpe's Übermensch fictionalizes the Leopold and Loeb case, focusing on the reason why the gifted teenagers' lives took such an unexpected turn, destroyed three families, and captivated the country in what was dubbed at the time as the "crime of the century."

About the Author

D.L. Scarpe has always had stories rattling around inside her head, locked up tight, only set free on those endless childhood nights spent swapping tales with her best friend. The story-weaving continued into adulthood–her little secret. However, raising a family; managing a household; building retaining walls, patios, or fire pits from stones (rock “jigsaw puzzles”); refinishing oak floors and furniture; or helping her husband on a roof–although she tried to pay attention when on a roof–kept her too busy for that other side of her to come out. So, it remained a secret.

But kids grow up and bodies get too tired for physical labor, and now it’s time to pursue her own passions and dreams. Working on her bucket list, she picked three things that make her happy, and she’s pursuing them all with no apologies:

Writing.

Shoes.

Tattoos.

My Review

The Axe Packs A Lot of Action into a Short Space. The story is short, with the written version hitting only eight chapters and 66 pages. The author packs a lot of action and dialogue into the short space. The action and suspense launch immediately, and the pace carries through to the last few pages. The gnawing suspense keeps readers engaged and invested in finishing the mystery puzzle and hearing the pieces lock into place.

The Author's Writing Style Works Well in the Audiobook Format. The novel is very dialogue-driven and the plot is more psychological drama than convoluted mystery. The storyline is simple, with only a few characters, and the author leaves enough breadcrumbs that readers will expect the ending. Having said that, readers should expect to become engaged enough in the dramatic scenes that they will be invested in the main characters' stories through the last page.

The Narration Creates an Emotional Journey in a Short Space. The narrator successfully gave each character a distinct voice that pulled readers into the emotional, dramatic story. There was never a point in the story when I couldn't "hear" which character was "speaking."

Would I Recommend The Axe by Linda Griffin? I didn't find the first part of the story very realistic, so it took a bit for me to settle into the book. If you are seeking a technical, convoluted mystery with deeply developed characters--this short novel is not that book. However, if you focus on the psychological drama and the character interactions, the novel is very engaging and interesting. You will solve the mystery before the end, but still have plenty of reasons to stay invested in the novel's outcomes. It's a simple, easy-to-understand story that will hold reader or listener interest to the end. The novel's subject matter is a difficult one, but it creates a very engaging, dramatic storyline here.

Thriller Review: Crossing Day by William A. Glass

Today, I have a unique historical thriller that reimagines history and offers a thought provoking look at some difficult topics. Check out Crossing Day, read my thoughts on the book, learn about author Williams A. Glass & buy the book on Amazon!

About the Book

It's been one hundred and sixty years since the Confederacy won its independence at the Battle of Altamaha Crossing. Slaves of African descent still perform most of the work in the South. This seems normal to Ryan Walters and his friends who attend high school in Huntsville, Alabama. Like teens everywhere, they enjoy sharing videos, playing sports, and hanging out with friends.

Jaybird's Drive-In is a favorite gathering place for the teenagers. There, they befriend Mish, a slave girl who works as a server. When the restaurant’s owner sells Mish to a dirty old man, Ryan and his friends awaken to the injustice around them. Despite the danger, they decide to help Mish escape. Will they succeed?

My Review

Expect a thought-provoking and uncomfortable premise in this novel. Crossing Day presents a thought-provoking and uncomfortable premise that challenges readers to confront complex issues of identity, race, and the intersection of past and present. Set within a divided society, in a world resulting from a re-imagined history,  this novel explores the lives of several characters who are forced to navigate a world filled with prejudice and systemic injustice. Glass introduces readers to a journey where uncomfortable truths about privilege, history, and personal responsibility unfold, forcing characters—and by extension, readers—to question their roles in perpetuating societal divides. While fictional and unique, the storyline is a darker one that engages and entertains, but it is also unsettling.

The story is well-written and complex. The writing style and number of characters made this one require a little attention to detail to keep the characters and perspectives aligned. The story unfolds through the eyes of various characters, each with their own voice. This approach adds character insights, from the protagonists to the secondary figures, that help readers understand the complexities of the character's emotions, motivations, and struggles. However, the shifting perspectives were sometimes difficult to follow until I settled into the novel's voices and flow.

Would I Recommend Crossing Day by William A. Glass? The characters' ages and stories make this read like a young adult novel, but the story is complex and thought-provoking enough that older adults will find it quite engaging as well. Crossing Day is particularly suitable for older teens and young adults, as it provides relatable teen characters and experiences and allows readers to engage with difficult yet essential conversations about societal issues. The novel's exploration of identity, race, and systemic oppression offers a compelling entry point for young readers to reflect on their own place within the world and how they can contribute to positive change. The characters' struggles with self-awareness, moral dilemmas, and personal growth will resonate with a young audience navigating their own journeys of understanding and self-discovery. If you enjoy re-imagining history and young adult adventure novels, this should be on your list. This unique book could undoubtedly become a well-received series.

But can Blair leave his past behind and start fresh at Trudeau High? Or will his infamy follow him from LA to MTL?

My Review

Great Coming of Age Story with Wonderful Characters. This is definitely a book that will appeal to older teens and young adult readers. At first, I thought it would be a little lengthy for that audience--but, I was ready to follow the characters for hundreds more pages by the end! The teens in the novel face many challenges and teen-dramas as the storylines progress. Expect to root for every character (except maybe Blair) from the very first page. This is a book that I would have read with my teens, and one that we all would have enjoyed. The writing style is engaging and entertaining and the characters are realistic and well-developed.

Expect to Become Invested in the Characters' Stories.  I love reading a book that makes me sad to leave it on the last page. I would love to follow these characters through a whole series of books--and will definitely look for more stories from this author in the future. His writing style caught my interest on page one and completely pulled me into the book and the characters' lives.

Would I Recommend The Bad Luck Nickel by Matthew Leslie? This book is written suitably for a teen audience--but, also engaging and interesting enough for an adult audience. If you enjoy coming-of-age stories with well done characters and entertaining plots--this is a great book for your reading list. There are some scenes with some heavier topics, so it may be better suited for older teens and adults--but, it is a wonderful coming-of-age novel.
