About the Book

Successful families and business owners tolerate far too much angst and pain surrounding their material assets and cherished relationships. What if hope for a better way was closer than you knew to be possible?

Packed with uncommon insights, boots on the ground exercises, and real client stories, you will emerge from the experience with a profound exhale of relief, and practical steps to make the journey from friction to ease.

Read an Excerpt

In the pages that follow, I have endeavored to create more of an experience than a traditional book. Some people will power through attempting a quick read, and others will find the popcorn of a new idea in the pauses we have carefully infused throughout.

One of my favorite mottos is, “Hope is a great conversation.” Through a combination of compassionate sarcasm, tender truths, and dense prose, my hope is that families read for what they haven’t heard and not what they already know. At times you’ll find yourself rereading a sentence or a paragraph. When you do, please know that I have attempted to embed deeper nuance into those nuggets of compassion and contemplation.

Each chapter offers deep thinking exercises, audio overviews of our counseling concepts, and real client stories. In our decades of counseling and teaching families and advisors, we know that personal interaction with the material has a dramatic effect on the depth of influence, and the speed and durability of progress. Beyond reading or hearing a presentation, this deeper engagement helps families chip away at change. If you are holding an actual 3D book, versus an e-book, you’ll find blank journal pages at the back on which to capture your thinking from the exercises. If you don’t have a hard copy, you’ll want to allocate a notebook or journal to do the work.

Meet the Author

Joe Strazzeri is an attorney and counselor to successful families and business owners. With a lifelong desire to become a lawyer, he leveraged his second career as a general contractor, hammering nails to pay for law school. He has been self-made since his 20s.

He is a founding partner in four companies that serve multi-generational affluent families and self-made business owners, and he teaches the trusted advisors to both. Their life’s work centers on Three Systems of Family Thriving: family wealth, family relationships and family business relationships, and family advisory relationships. They focus on four key capabilities: tax masterminding, business succession, cleaning up messes in families’ existing planning, and Family Synergy Work.

Over 25 years in business, he and his teams have counseled more than 750 eight- and nine-figure net worth families, and thousands of others. This experiential sample size renders the insights and perspectives shared in this book.

Joe credits his entrepreneurial tenacity to the dichotomy of his parents’ origins. His mother a German, Iowa farmgirl, and his father, a crazy Sicilian entrepreneur, who began life as a teenage immigrant and drove the success of several real estate enterprises.

About the Book

Frustrated novelist Danny is resigned to writing material for trade shows, promoting garage doors and non-stick cookware. His ex-wife threatens legal action for non-payment of alimony. Danny never dreamed the answer to his troubles could be larceny.
But then wealthy, charming Packard Hale III reenters his life. He was Danny's college roommate, and like Lupin and Raffles, he now fancies himself a gentleman thief. Packard hires Danny to write about his capers.

Danny follows Packard as they break into a mansion and steal, among other things, a priceless Chinese vase and a curiously valuable souvenir blanket from Branson, Missouri. However, it's not Packard who is pursued by the police, but Danny.

Simultaneously, he struggles to please his client, a lawn-and-garden CEO with an erotic attraction to lawnmowers. Danny also endures abuse from Soren, a boozy has-been Vegas magician. He tolerates the mistreatment because of Crystal, the magician's assistant. He's falling for her.

When he learns Soren screwed Crystal out of rights to magic tricks she's created -- and in spite of the cops on his tail -- Danny plots revenge. He and Packard attempt the daring theft of a state-of-the-art lawnmower—during a live performance in front of 400 people.

My Review

Expect to smile from beginning to end as you read The Gentleman Thief Steals a Blanket. The book starts with silliness as readers meet Packard and experience the characteristic banter that will persist throughout the book. The novel is heavy on dialogue--and this back-and-forth dialogue is full of silliness and humor that will spark eye rolls, head shakes, and full-on laughter. My daughter likes to say, with her favorite, made-up word, "It was so un-serious," when she reads or watches something where the characters fall into one misadventure after another in perfect comedic timing — and this book offers that rolling flow of smiles from beginning to end.

Bumbling Characters Drive the Storyline.  The characters are loveable, laughable, endearing victims of chance and mishaps that just drive a fun story. You will root for happy endings--and laugh at the situations from all character angles as you move through the story.  It's impossible to dislike Danny or Packard--or even the detectives tasked with justice. Every scene connects well to offer silliness and fun, but also connects just as well to give readers a complete story and a satisfying ending.

Would I Recommend The Gentleman Thief Steals a Blanket by Mark Nutter? If you enjoy light reads, cozy mysteries, and comedies that are well-organized enough to hold a plot while throwing silly antics left and right--this is a very entertaining novel for your reading list. If you want a serious crime novel--this isn't it--but, if you want to step back and slip into a silly misadventure that will keep you entertained from beginning to end, give this book a spot on your reading list.

My Review

The Author Offers Well-Done Short Stories. The author is an excellent storyteller, with a gift for portraying a variety of characters at various stages of life's journey in ways that feel very real and authentic. While the stories in this book are brief, making them ideal for readers short on time or attention, they never feel too brief or incomplete. Each story is very well-developed, realistic and complete. While the stories are full and engaging, some will hold your attention beyond the last page.

Expect Wonderful Characters. The author creates characters that are very real, relatable, and believable. While you may not like all of them--their development and portrayal serve strong purposes in each story.

The author finds stories everywhere around him and turns them into pieces that readers will want to read and characters readers will want to know more about. About the Book

1242. Wounded and captured after the Battle on the Ice, English knight Richard Fitz Simon becomes the unlikely guest of Prince Alexander Nevsky of Novgorod. Curious about his prisoner, Alexander commands his scholar to record Richard’s tale.

Richard’s story begins in 1203, when betrayal shatters his path to knighthood and drives him from England to the merchant city of Lübeck. There, entangled in an illicit affair and the cutthroat salt trade, he finds only temporary refuge. Fleeing once again, he joins the Livonian Brothers of the Sword—a militant order sworn to spread Christendom across the pagan Baltic.

Amid the cold austerity of Riga’s commandery and the looming threat of enemy tribes, Richard must battle not just for survival, but for meaning in a life shaped by violence, doubt, and fractured loyalties. When a pagan army threatens to overrun their outpost, he faces a final reckoning—one that will test his faith, his honor, and the limits of his courage.

My Review

Expect an Inspirational, Emotional, Faith-Filled Look at Anna's Life. While creating a fictionalized version of Anna's life, the author does an excellent job keeping Anna's story grounded in her real-life courage, faith and values. This grounding creates a novel that feels honest, realistic, and inspiring. Anna faced difficulties and challenges in her life--but her faith and strength of character pulled her through and moved her to navigate her own path and also to serve others in need. Anna's story is not of a famous person--but of a relatable woman who used her faith in God to guide her in life. Anna's story is an emotional one, but one that will not lift you in some way as you watch her overcome very difficult obstacles and decisions.

Anna is a Clean Read with A Strong Storyline. The author keeps Anna's story clean and faith-driven, focusing on the main character's strength and perseverance. While the main character faced difficulties and situations that were at times heartbreaking, the story keeps the spirit of the uplifting messages that Anna likely offered in her own memoir.

Would I Recommend Anna by Travis E. Short? I love memoirs and fictionalized novels based on true events and real people. While this novel, again, isn't based on a celebrity or a well-known motivational speaker or such, the author chose a wonderful, faithful character to highlight for readers. Anna's life focused on God and her faith--with decisions and her path being driven by that faith. If you are a Christian reader, you will find Anna's story faith-strengthening and empowering. However, if you are not a believer, you will still gain powerful messages from Anna's story and her giving nature and strength in moral character--without feeling overburdened by religious messages. Stories like Anna's are always worth a spot on the reading list, and I enjoyed this well-written novel very much.
