My Review

KP McCarthy Brings Readers a Must-Read Page Turner. I honestly think this is the best book I've read this year. I was undoubtedly daunted a bit when I found the massive character list at the front of the book--and I would be lying if I said that I immediately fell into sync with the author's writing style and Stanhope's story. After re-reading the first chapter a couple of times, however, I settled into Stanhope's emotional journey. I learned along with the main character as he encountered a nonstop flow of life, death, grief, doubt (and even love). The novel is driven by the eclectic cast of characters and a spiritual/philosophical journey to find meaning, hope, and healing through challenges and pain.

Mortal Weather Isn't a Light Read. Mortal Weather is a novel that requires you to read every word and character's story. Every single character adds something to the plot and flow of Standhope's story. While there are many characters, you don't need to memorize or worry about keeping them placed--the author sets them for you perfectly and grows his story around them. However, you must pay attention to the individual stories and their contributions, as each one is important. This story isn't a novel to skim or read without focus. Mortal Weather is a thought-provoking story that will hold the reader's interest through every single word from beginning to end. Expect to read with attention, focus, and an open mind.

Would I Recommend Mortal Weather by KP McCarthy? Initially,  I wasn't sure what I was reading. I had to change my perception, read the author's words, and see his story. The novel feels like a memoir and is loaded with life stories, tragedies, loss, life, love, and inklings of hope and wisdom. Readers who enjoy spiritual or philosophical looks at life documented wonderfully with elements of religion, poetry, mythology, history, animals, nature--and the honest realities of grief, darkness, and hope--will enjoy this novel from beginning to end. If you are looking for a light, easy read--this is not that book. If you want a thought-provoking literary fiction that you can't put down--add this one to your reading list.

about the book

A lethal plague sweeps the globe. Millions have died. Survivors are confined to their homes.

Gabriel passes his time in a small New York apartment on the city's Upper West Side. During the plodding solitude of the lockdown, he observes several strangers in their nearby apartments. As he watches them struggle to survive a world at risk of extinction, he wonders about their lives—where they're from, what they value, how they're coping with a deadly contagion. All alone, he develops a vague yet important connection to these people, an affection for those who are struggling to survive isolation, fear and looming death.

Told in powerful, spellbinding free verse, Gabriel's observations grow deeper and more elaborate as the endless days pass. But when he and a woman from across the street begin to watch each other from afar, his imagination begins to collide with the bleak reality of the times.

Book Title:  Mother Knows Worst by Sofia Bella Roma
Category:  Adult Fiction (18+),  280 pages
Genre: Literary Fiction, Novel
Publisher:  Mascot Books
Release date:  December 2022
Content Rating:  PG -13

Pinnacle Award Winner!
"Author Sofia Bella Roma tells an absorbing story about two people from very different backgrounds falling in love and struggling to navigate the circumstances and people around them. Infusing romance, humor, and plenty of drama, Roma weaves an engaging narrative that keeps hold of the reader until the last page. Mother Knows Worst is not just a dramatic comedy but also a novel that showcases the challenges people sometimes face in adapting to other cultures, especially in relationships involving in-laws. The characters have their own idiosyncrasies, which make them very intriguing to read. Rose and Anil's dynamic feels genuine, as do their respective struggles and conflicts. Recommended to readers who savor drama novels revolving around relationships." - Reviewed by Pikasho Deka for Readers' Favorite

"A lively, thought-provoking journey into one young woman's marriage, cross-cultural encounters, and life. Mother Knows Worst is recommended not just for novel readers seeking stories of women's experiences, but for reading groups interested in the psychological entanglements between different cultures and generations." - Reviewed by Midwest Book Reviews

About the Book

After trying her hand at acting, Rose decides to change career paths and enter law school.

She enrolls in law school in a sleepy New England town, only to find that the practice of law is not all she will study. This quirky thirty-something Italian girl falls in love when she lays eyes on Anil, a handsome intellectual from India. The two discover a deep connection and quickly begin a romantic relationship. What could go wrong as their romance blossoms? Their future looks bright. They have each other. They have great friends. They also have Anil’s mother. Inspired by true events, Mother Knows Worst is a humorous and heartfelt novel. Rose is on a path to finding herself, love, and relationships, taking the reader on a delightful and often comedic journey as she explores two cultural worlds colliding.

My Review

Mother Knows Worst Brings Readers Relatable Characters and Scenes. The author brings readers humor, romance, family drama, and a lot of relatable character growth and life challenges in this uniquely presented novel. Readers follow the main character, Rose, as she works through her personal struggles, relationship woes, and life challenges through therapy. Rose gives her therapist (and readers) the details of her past, her relationship with her husband, Anil, and the effects of cultural differences, a problematic mother-in-law, personal insecurities, and outside elements' impacts on her marriage. Even readers not facing a cross-cultural marriage will find the pieces of Rose's story relatable and engaging.

Roma Offers an Easy to Read, Engaging Novel. I didn't immediately fall into sync with the author's writing style--and I didn't immediately enjoy Rose's character. It took several pages to settle into the back-and-forth flow between the character's memories and the therapy session details. Once I did, however, the storytelling technique was straightforward to read and engaging. As the storyline is therapeutic for Rose, it is interestingly therapeutic for the reader too. Through the humor, drama, personal reflections, and character growth, I quickly found myself quite attached to Rose and her story.

Would I Recommend Mother Knows Worst by Sofia Bella Roma? Fans of family dramas, women's fiction, and relatable, more realistic romance novels will enjoy this novel. Maintaining a marriage isn't always easy--especially with added challenges beyond the day-to-day "usual." I had the best mother-in-law ever. My husband, unfortunately, did not. While my mother didn't have a cultural basis for her havoc--she created challenges in many other unnecessary ways. The author highlights the cultural and generational differences that Rose faced in a unique, relatable manner that makes this an entertaining and thought provoke novel for your reading list.

About the Book

Clarissa Martinez, a biracial young woman, has lived in seven different countries by the time she turns twenty. She thinks it’s time to settle in a place she could call home. But where?

She joins a quest for the provenance of stolen illuminated manuscripts, a medieval art form that languished with the fifteenth century invention of the printing press. For her, these ancient manuscripts elicit cherished memories of children’s picture books her mother read to her, nourishing a passion for art.

Though immersed in art, she’s naïve about life. She’s disheartened and disillusioned by the machinations the quest reveals of an esoteric, sometimes unscrupulous art world. What compels individuals to steal artworks, and conquerors to plunder them from the vanquished? Why do collectors buy artworks for hundreds of millions of dollars? Who decides the value of an art piece and how?

And she wonders—will this quest reward her with a sense of belonging, a sense of home?

My Review

The Golden Manuscripts Crosses Time and Genres. This novel is a unique read. The book flows between historical fiction and coming of age with a bit of romance and a lot of self-discovery, reflection, and life introspection. The author takes readers on a quest to return looted Medieval manuscripts to their home and a quest to help a young woman find her own place and home in the world. As the main character, Clarissa searches for the lost manuscripts and ponders the value and significance of such treasures; she navigates her own path toward finding herself and a place to feel at home.

The Golden Manuscripts is a Stand Alone Novel. While part of a larger series, this novel is a stand-alone story with its own characters and storyline. I've read The Shade Under the Mango Tree from this series and enjoyed it. While it is similar in theme to The Golden Manuscripts--I felt much more drawn to Clarissa's character and the flow of this story. The story moves evenly and thoughtfully as Clarissa seeks a resolution to the quest at hand and to her life's path in general.

Would I Recommend The Golden Manuscripts by Evy Journey? This story isn't an action-packed, adventurous thriller. It isn't (entirely) historical fiction. It isn't really a coming-of-age novel or contemporary romance novel, either. It is a story that takes readers on a discovery mission as the main character seeks insights from cultural elements, art, supporting characters, and the world around her to find her own place. I recommend this novel to fans of thoughtful literary fiction--and I will likely pick up a few more of the books from this series too.
