About the Book

Do you have a story in you?

Do you know how to write it or how to tell it? Creating Stories has the answers. Hank Quense, the author of more than twenty books, tells you how to do it. He believes that stories come from the melding of three elements: getting ideas, story design and story-telling. Ideas have to come from the author. Creating Stories covers the last two. The book concentrates on developing characters including such rarely discussed requirements such as a dominant reader emotion and the character's biography. Plots are also covered in depth and a number of graphics are included to illustrate complex points. Another topic discusses subplots and how to utilize them and how to nest them within the main plot. A separate chapter discusses the relationship between the plot and the emotional arcs. Other topics covered are: character arcs, scene design, point-of-view, writing voice.

My Review

The Author Maps Out Creating Stories in a Very Useful, Well Organized Manner. This writing guide is packed with helpful information for fiction writers. While the material is more suited to new writers- or those still developing their writing voices and crafts- there are pieces within each section that could certainly serve to re-focus writers still seeking improvement tips and guidance. The author is very systematic and structured in his story creation style. Just as he offers tips and suggestions to readers, he provides examples and insights into his own writing processes, character, and story development. This book could be read section by section--but it will also prove helpful to use as a resource or reference guide while working through the writing of a fictional piece.

Readers will Find an Easy to Understand Guide for Fiction Writing. I have taken creative writing courses and workshops in the past. This book really covers so many elements of the creative fiction writing process in such an easy-to-read, easy-to-apply method that it is a very valuable resource to writers. The examples and suggestions provided by the author come from experiences and time-developed insights. While educational, this book is also engaging and well-designed for readers to both enjoy and employ in their writing works.

Would I Recommend Creating Stories by Hank Quense? Anyone can tell a story. Not everyone can successfully engage a reader with a fictional story from start to finish. The elements taught by Quense in this self-help book offer authors much to consider as they bring their story from idea to written fruition. The format of this novel is handy to new writers, but plenty of experienced self-published writers could also benefit from the structured methods this author suggests. If you are interested in fiction writing, this book is one that you could reference repeatedly as you develop your voice and storytelling style.

About the Book

As authors, we all know how important it is to get reviews for your book. Reviews help spread the word about your book, and it increases your book’s visibility and online promotion. Yes, the struggle is real and, as authors, we’ve all been there. That’s why we’ve compiled this book. Now, the purpose of this book is not to make sales. That’s why there is no cost for this book. The purpose is to distribute and share the information with our fellow authors—authors that we hope find the information as useful as we have. We did not want to write a “how-to” for getting reviews, because we think most authors have heard all the possible ways. Instead, we wanted to compile a list of valuable resources for getting reviews. And these valuable resources are specifically for the broke author.

The sites you will find in this book have options that are COMPLETELY FREE. These sites may also offer additional paid options, but, of course, those are entirely optional.

So check out this list of free resources, and we hope you get reviews out of them like we have.

Sincerely,

The Author Support Group

My Review

The Self Publishing Guru offers an Easy Use / Easy to Understand Guide for New Writers. With short chapters--the authors of this marketing guide for self-published authors hit the highlights of a wide range of marketing options, to-do tasks, and ideas. The guide, written in a very organized manner, recommends some tried and true resources and options and serves as a great starting point for new authors venturing into self-publishing and self-marketing.

The Self Publishing Guru Covers a lot of Material in a Short Time. From finding virtual assistants for outsourcing tasks to finding book reviewers, connecting with potential readers via social media, newsletters, groups, and more--as well as learning about editing and design and podcasts--this book is a great launching point for your book marketing efforts. Each chapter is short, direct, and to the point--but really does offer some unique and beneficial ideas and resources.

Would I Recommend The Self Publishing Guru: Book Marketing Resources for New Authors? I loved the layout of this book and found myself making some notes, visiting some resources, and learning about some new things. The book highlights just a few resources relative to each chapter. Still, those few will allow new authors to explore options and ideas along with The Self Publishing Guru's recommendations. Some of the resources and links do generate affiliate income for the book creators. I would definitely recommend this book as a quick read to dive into the world of marketing for self-publishers. Readers will also find additional resources, courses, and suggestions for further learning toward the end of the book.

About the Book

WANT TO WRITE A BOOK BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN?

The plot—sketchy maybe—is in your head. Now, how do you pull it together into a book?

Christian Freed to the rescue with So . . . You Want to Write a Book, taking you on a helpful and entertaining trip from honing your idea all the way through to making your publishing decisions.

This is not your typical “how-to-write” reference book. Rather, it helps you think through your situations, shares ways to improve your writing, and prepares you for the inevitable author frustrations.

No two ways about it—after writing more than 25 books himself, Freed knows a thing or two. An award-winning, best-selling author of military fantasy fiction, Freed uses humor, real learning curve experiences, and practical wisdom to guide would-be writers via four easy-to-digest units (and yes, the E word is “edit"):

-- That Nagging Idea
-- Where the Magic Happens
-- The Dreaded E Word
-- Wrapping It Up in a Neat Little Bow

Though primarily focused on the art of fiction writing, So . . . You Want to Write a Book will also benefit nonfiction writers; either way, it’s a “from-the-head-to-the-page" thing.

So, are you finally ready to write the book that’s in your head? Start by reading this book!

About the Author

Christian W. Freed was born in Buffalo, N.Y. more years ago than he would like to remember. After spending more than 20 years in the active duty US Army he has turned his talents to writing. Since retiring, he has gone on to publish 17 military fantasy and science fiction novels, as well as his memoirs from his time in Iraq and Afghanistan. His first published book (Hammers in the Wind) has been the #1 free book on Kindle 4 times and he holds a fancy certificate from the L Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest.

Passionate about history, he combines his knowledge of the past with modern military tactics to create an engaging, quasi-realistic world for the readers. He graduated from Campbell University with a degree in history and is pursuing a Masters of Arts degree in Military History from Norwich University. He currently lives outside of Raleigh, N.C. and devotes his time to writing, his family, and their two Bernese Mountain Dogs. If you drive by you might just find him on the porch with a cigar in one hand and a pen in the other.

About the Book

Does your future as a writer feel uncertain?

You write day after day. You dream of bestseller’s lists and royalty checks, but despite your best marketing efforts, those dreams remain out of reach.

You wonder if you’re wasting your time. Does your writing even matter?

Author Colleen M. Story, a long-time professional writer and writing coach, helps you decide whether you truly have a writer’s DNA. She examines why you feel pressured to make money with your work, why the search for a readership is both motivating and discouraging, and why it’s so common to doubt yourself along the way.

Step by step, you’ll gain a clear-eyed view at the challenges a writer faces in the outside world, while taking your own journey inward to discover what writing really means to you.

Should you continue on this path, or adjust your course now before it’s too late? Don’t waste your precious time in indecision. Let Your Writing Matters guide you to your truth and you’ll never look back again.

My Review

Your Writing Matters Takes Readers on an In-Depth, Informed Journey of Soul Searching. I love the author's writing style. She does a fantastic job breaking down the subject of becoming/being/finding success as a writer--and reminding readers of the many factors, benefits, pitfalls, etc., of choosing writing as a career or as a passionate pursuit. Through quizzes for readers, well place questions, many points to ponder, exercises to consider and complete--and many examples and resources for further thought--this book is the perfect book for anyone considering (or reconsidering) becoming a writer.

Readers Will Find Loads of Reinforced Ideas as the Book Progresses. Some passages are a bit redundant from time to time as the author re-introduces previous ideas through furthered examples or additional points. I found this repetition helpful! Sometimes, we need to hear the same advice in multiple ways as we work through self-doubt and reflection to accept or understand the concepts relative to our lives. Writers facing doubt or challenges will undoubtedly relate to every section of this book--and will definitely find guidance in restructuring their writing life.

Would I Recommend Your Writing Matters by Colleen M. Story? This book is another guide for writers that I will keep on my bookshelf and re-visit when self-doubt or fears enter my mind. I think this is a must-have for writers and those working or considering other creative pursuits. Story's down to Earth, relatable writing style, and accurate, working knowledge of the field make this an inspiring, educational, and valuable resource for the writer's resource shelf!
