About the Book

High school is stressful enough without having to save your town from evil incarnate.

But Starla never really had a choice in the matter.

Starla, an aspiring artist, lives an uneasy life with her mom after the sudden loss of her dad. She seeks refuge at the home of her grandmother, Ma Mère, where she feels safe. As a teenager, Starla begins to demonstrate magical abilities. Among them, she discovers her hands glow with purple light and she can understand the squeaks of her pets.

Her new abilities are no surprise to Ma Mère, who reveals a long-hidden family secret of power and magic. Starla's new abilities have been passed down for generations and were awakened by the shift in power when Hel, an ancient evil being, escaped containment.

Hel and those under its power are determined to gain possession and control over the citizens of East Pine and the magical dimensions concealed there. Starla and her friends refuse to let that happen.

If she hopes to thwart Hel's insatiable quest for power and regain control over it before East Pine and all of the dimensions of existence are destroyed, Starla will have to trust her instincts and find the courage to harness the ancestral magic she was born to wield.

My Review

The Authors Create a Well-Done Fantasy World for Starla.  Blending an exciting world of magic, special powers and good vs. evil with some realistic elements of teen life, the authors create a very engaging world for young Starla's fantasy adventures.  While the heroine seeks to prevent evil-doer Hel from carrying out his plans, she has to come of age a bit into her new town, place in life and her family's magical powers.
Expect a Large Cast of Characters and the Need to Read with Focus.  This is a longer young adult book that introduces many characters--some quite necessary, others with little purpose to the growing plot.  Sometimes the shifts between characters and scenes were a little confusing and required a re-read or a refresher on a certain character's name or role in the story.  Once I had the characters mapped out in my mind, I was able to read the flow of the storyline a little easier.
Would I Recommend Starla by Terrilynn Moore and Quade B. Smith?  I enjoyed Starla's character in this adventure.  I enjoyed watching her grow into her role and find her place in her magical world.  If you enjoy young adult fantasies with female leads and a well-designed fantasy world--this is an engaging story of good vs. evil.

My Review

Death Takes a Bath Brings a Fun Start to the Cozy Mystery Series. I wasn't a fan of the first few chapters of this book as the author introduced a few of her characters and developed a bit of an instant-romance relationship between Maddie and Constable Edward. Some of those early interactions were pretty unrealistic and slightly eye-roll-worthy. Then, the storyline began to develop, a mystery unfolded, and twists and turns began to take shape in a well-paced, more believable manner. There is certainly a young adult feel to the story at the beginning--and the clean story continues that young adult theme through to the end. However, it becomes more of an engaging, cozy mystery with some history and archaeology in a setting that an adult can enjoy. All in all, this novel brings a fun, engaging start to the author's series.

Readers will find Characters to Love and a Well-Rounded Mystery. Readers will enjoy the characters in this novel as they grow, change, and join forces to solve the mystery at hand. With humor and an eclectic cast of characters, the author brings this novel's mystery to a close while developing the setting and characters for future adventures. I enjoyed Maddie's personality and resourcefulness--and the humor of her thoughts and perspectives at times!

Would I Recommend Death Takes a Bath by Sharon Lynn? If you enjoy clean, young adult cozy mysteries with interesting settings and likable characters, this novel will keep you engaged to the end. If you are put off by insta-romance--be patient for a few early chapters, and the story becomes more of a mystery as the characters find their footing and the author develops their mystery-solving "team ."I enjoyed the novel and the author's storytelling style. I look forward to following the characters through many more mysteries and adventures.

CHAPTER 1

The First Discovery

“What’s nine-one-one in England?” I squeaked at my cell.

Black dots dancing before my eyes, I stabbed at the mic icon on the phone and repeated the question.

“I found one number for emergency services in Great Britain,” the soothing electronic voice informed me. “Nine-nine-nine.”

My fingers trembled, and the phone smacked to the ground. As I reached to retrieve it, Roddy, the cottage’s fluffy black-and-white rabbit, hopped to inspect the object.

Jaw clenched in a death grip, my vision getting cloudy, I forced myself to stand still and count slowly to five. The world stopped spinning, allowing me to reach for the phone.

“Don’t eat that,” I warned Roddy in a passing imitation of my mother. I scooped him up for comfort and maneuvered my cell so I could see the screen.

“Okay. Here we go.” I pushed the numbers as I said them. “Nine, nine, nine.”

“What service do you require?” a voice on the other end inquired. “Ambulance, police, fire, or Coast Guard?”

“Um.” Coast Guard? My brain short-circuited on the unfamiliar option. If there was one thing you never needed in the Arizona desert, it was the Coast Guard. My body swayed unsteadily as I contemplated the question.

“Are you able to speak?” the voice prompted.

Emergency. I needed to tell them. “Ear,” I stuttered, unable to form a sentence around the horror of the situation.

“You’re here, yes. If you are unable to speak, tap twice if you are in imminent danger.”

The professional but concerned voice had its intended effect of calming me. Shaking my head, I changed tactics. Instead of discussing the details of what I’d found, I asked for the police.

After a complicated exchange that gave me time to form my response, a male police officer asked my emergency.

Shuddering, I said, “Hi. My name is Madeline McGuire. I’m an exchange student from America, and I found an ear.” The words tumbled from my mouth. “A human ear. A freshly severed human ear.”

Saying it out loud made it real. Bunny in arm, I sunk to the floor, clinging to fluffy comfort. The image of the blood-stained ear spilling out of the salt-packed box loomed in my mind, stirring the acids in my stomach.

The voice of the officer broke through my thoughts. “You did the right thing to call. Do you have the address of your location?”

“Ash Tree cottage on Greenway Lane, Bath, England.”

“I’ll stay on the line until a constable arrives,” he told me.

Teeth chattering, I nodded robotically.

“Miss?”

“Yeah. Okay. I’ll be fine. Fine,” I said, not sounding even a little fine. “I’ll make coffee. This seems like a coffee moment.”

“I’ve found that tea is quite soothing in difficult situations,” the officer offered.

Ignoring the suggestion, I treaded into the kitchen, Roddy clutched to my chest, the phone pressed to my ear.

“I could have done without your discovery, Roddy,” I muttered. When I brought the rabbit in from the pouring rain, I let him roam free long enough for him to chew a hole through the cardboard of a newly delivered package.

“What was that, miss?” the policeman on the line asked.

“Oh, sorry. Talking to my rabbit.”

“Miss?”

“Nothing. I’m fine.”

I hadn’t blinked in a long time. A tremor rippled through me as I set the rabbit on the kitchen floor. With a weird detachment, I noted that Roddy’s black-and-white fur matched the checkerboard tile. The pattern became mesmerizing, a safe place for my mind until I collapsed against the counter.

Catching myself, I said, “Coffee. Coffee is good.” Filling the electric kettle, I flickered the “On” switch, then retrieved the French press. A mostly empty bag of stale coffee sat behind the press.

Dumping the ground beans into the glass cylinder, I filled the press with hot water.

It was a mundane task that I had done hundreds of times. I wondered, could I make coffee without my ear?

As I pushed the plunger to infuse the water with grounds, I almost shoved the contraption onto the floor. Catching it just in time, I shakily poured myself a cup. Ignoring the scalding heat, I gulped.

Caffeine coursed through my system, making me jumpy as I thought about the consequences of receiving a body part. An ear in the mail would make a little sense back in Chicago, where I was getting my archeology degree. Mobsters still controlled parts of the city, and the paper always mentioned grizzly retribution crimes.

As I took another sip, I imagined finding the package while at college. The dorm would buzz with gossip, wondering what the intended recipient had done. And I would know it wasn’t meant for me.

I had only been in Bath for two days. I didn’t know anyone in England, especially not well enough to offend them.

Did that mean the homeowners where I had a room were being warned? My stomach curdled at the thought. I hadn’t met them yet, but I considered them friends after the year of emails we exchanged. Bad people wouldn’t own a bunny, would they?

Losing control, I hunched over, retching dry heaves.

I leaned my back against the pantry door and slid to the floor. Roddy hopped in my lap, comforting me.

“Miss?”

I yelped, causing the rabbit to bound off of me, his powerful legs digging into my jeans. I’d forgotten the phone.

“Hello?”

“Constable Bailey is on your street. His collar number is 16941.”

“There’s a pull chain to open the latch on the gate. The box is in the mudroom. Tell him to come in.”

“Mudroom?” For the first time, my dispatcher sounded unsure.

About the Book

The year is 1938 and a family in the small South Carolina town of Beaufort faces serious adversity. After the birth of her long-awaited son, Mary Banks dives into a dark postpartum period, throwing her into a deep depression. Thinking that her sister, Rose, is offering her a helping hand, Mary leaves her family and goes to Boston in search of a medical cure, not to be heard from again.

Where is Mary Banks? What has Rose done with the much-loved mother and wife of the Banks family? Finally, Mary’s 15-year-old daughter, Estelle can wait no longer. She gathers her wits and her courage and without a word, runs off to heroically rescue her beloved mother in faraway Boston. This is where the adventure begins……

My Review

A Daughter's Journey Brings a Historical Peek at Women's Mental Health. This novel gives a young adult glimpse into women's mental health during the early 1900s. While the book is a bit abrupt, and its details of the treatment of women's mental health are limited, the focus on postpartum depression and the views and treatment of it by society and the medical profession in our not-so-distant history is an interesting basis for this story.

The Author Creates a Heartwarming Adventure for Her Main Character. The main character seems younger than 15 as she navigates her way from small-town South Carolina to Boston, yet it is impossible to be less than drawn to her character and her emotional journey to find her mother and bring her home. The plot pulls Estella through her adventure with an endearing cast of supporting characters and hopes for a happy ending. There are characters to love and hate--and interesting relationships and dialogue that keep readers interested in turning the pages to the end.

Would I recommend A Daughter's Journey by Myra Lee Glass? The novel holds some less than believable coincidences, leaves some pieces of the story unresolved, and ends rather suddenly--but it is an entertaining adventure for younger young adult readers who do not get too caught up in the why's and what's next details. I would have liked more details on the motivations of Mary's sister--and a longer novel that gave us more of the follow-up story of the family. Those who enjoy light, historical mystery adventures geared toward tween/teen readers will enjoy this novel.

About the Book

The Black Shuck’s forces gather just beyond the mist . . .

Captain Justice Kasric knows how complicated family can be. The escalating Human-Faerie war has scattered and wounded her siblings and transformed her parents beyond recognition. After narrowly escaping yet another dangerous clash, fifteen-year-old Justice has had enough. She’s determined to defeat the Black Shuck, the mysterious leader controlling the Faerie invasion of London, but if Justice hopes to stand a chance at victory, she’ll have to do the impossible: reunite her family and lead them against the looming Faerie Armada.

With her mother and brother at the helm of the enemy fleet, and the prophesized Seven Virtues slipping out of reach, Justice more than has her work cut out for her. Even if she can save England, the cost may be higher than she’s willing to pay.

My Review

Armadas in the Mist Continues the Fantasy Series. The author continues this series by giving readers some recap early on in the book & then continuing the fairy war adventures with Justice and her cast of crew and family. Readers will find some new twists and turns and some new elements in Justice's science fiction/fantasy world. I always feel that a series is best read in order--but if you have missed the second book in this series--you could probably read this third book without feeling lost in the flow.

Armadas in the Mist is Well Paced Once the Storyline Advances. It took me a bit to feel that the story was moving into place--but, once I settled in, I liked the action-packed pace and the unusual twists and turns the author tossed in.

Would I Recommend Armadas in the Mist by Christian Klaver? I enjoy Justice as a character and the unique setting and adventures the author created for her journey. There could certainly be future adventures with Justice--and I would add them to my reading list. If you enjoy clean, fun, save-the-world fantasy adventures with brave female leads--this is a great series for your teen's reading list.

Young Adult Fantasy Novel Review: Justice at Sea by Christian Klaver

This week, I am sharing reviews from the young adult fantasy Empire of the House of Thorns series by Christian Klaver!  Today, I am reviewing the second book, Justice At Sea!  Learn about the series, read my thoughts on the books, learn about the author and be sure to enter for a chance to win a prize in the book tour giveaway at the end of this post.

Book Title:  Justice at Sea (Empire of the House of Thorns series - Book Two) by Christian Klaver
Category:  YA Fiction (Ages 13-17),  416 pages
GenreYA Fantasy
Publisher:  CamCat Books
Release date:  December 2021
Content Rating: PG. It's very clean.

About the Book

The tides of the Faerie War are turning, but at how high a cost for the Kasric family?

Justice Kasric, her siblings, and her parents are locked in combat on both sides of the Human-Faerie War. At fifteen, Justice may be the youngest ever Admiral to command her own ship and lead a resistance, but she has the magic and the will to do it. If only nearly every other member of her family weren’t either in immediate danger of dying—or attempting to kill her!

Forced to make dangerous pacts with more than one unpredictable ally, only Justice can decide how far she’ll go to save London. Is it worth sacrificing even a member of her own family.

My Review

Justice at Sea Continues the Clean Fantasy Series. This book picks up the fairy war story from Shadows Over London and takes readers on new adventures, all while keeping the novel clean and teen-friendly. There is some re-capping of the first book--but not enough that readers should skip that first book. Like any series--especially a fantasy one with so much attention to character growth and world-building--plan to read the series in order from the beginning.

Justice at Sea is a Nice Bridge in the Middle of the Series. I struggled to settle into the first book--but fell directly into the story development and action with this novel. There is still some world-building and new characters to meet--but the action is more fast-paced and a little less predictable than in the first book.

Would I Recommend Justice at Sea by Christian Klaver? I enjoy Justice as a character and know that this series would have entertained my teen daughters. This book does an excellent job of furthering the twists and turns to lead readers into the next book. The storyline is a little dark--but clean and written with older teens' interests in mind. I think I liked this book better than the first because I was familiar with the fantasy world, and I was ready to follow the series' heroine toward some resolutions to those early loose ends. The story unveils some secrets--but there are still loose ends for the next novel.

About the Book

The Faerie have come to take London, and only one girl stands in their way.

Justice isn’t your average fifteen-year-old girl. She’s an irrepressible scoundrel, and she always has a plan. But her world falls apart when her father forcibly bundles the entire family into carriages in the middle of the night and carts them off to a strange mansion on the outskirts of Victorian London. The Faerie are invading, but the Kasric siblings can’t stay neutral in the ensuing war when they find their parents on opposing sides. Justice has no choice but to embrace her burgeoning magical powers to fight against the Faerie and save her family.

My Review

Shadows Over London Introduces Teen Readers to a Clean Fantasy Series. I enjoyed that this novel and the series are written cleanly and interestingly enough to hold the interest of the teen target audience. This first book introduces many characters and devotes some time to building the fantasy world and letting the story's characters discover the magic at play in their world. It also keeps a reasonably well-done balance between a coming of age in a dysfunctional family story and an entertaining fantasy tale with a female heroine coming to terms with her role in the family and with the dark, magical dangers of the fantasy world around her.

This Book Requires a Little Patience at First. I struggled to settle into the story at first as the characters were introduced and the story began to form. Once I could organize the characters in my mind, I enjoyed the story. It is a little predictable, and there are times when the teen heroine seems younger than her age or behaves in a frustrating manner. Expect to read with a bit of patience at times until you settle into the story and the action builds.

Would I Recommend Shadows Over London by Christian Klaver? This book is a fantasy novel that my daughters would have enjoyed--and one that I would have felt comfortable with them reading as teens. This book does a nice job setting up the series and leaves readers with plenty of loose ends for the next adventure. If you enjoy slightly darker, older teen-oriented, young adult fantasy stories with unique characters--this series is worth a spot on your reading list.

About the Book

Caught between love and revenge, Jake has one chance to live up to the man his uncle was.

Earth crashed into interstellar politics as a lightweight, lagging so far behind other planetary weapons systems everyone feared they wouldn’t survive first contact with other worlds without quick action. By 2185, Earth had united itself into five geographic sectors and developed a defense system powerful enough to keep aggressors at bay—for now, at least.

Jake Saunders became a Legion soldier to honor the memory of his war hero uncle, who was brutally murdered in front of him when he was still a young teen. Fast forward a few years, and Jake and his best friend Cal have been tasked with escorting Cal’s older sister Diane to become Earth’s ambassador on a far-off planet. It’s the opportunity of Diane’s career, very likely a lifetime post. But for Jake, that could mean a lifetime’s heartbreak. He has loved Diane since they were kids, and every step closer to that ambassador assignment is a step closer to goodbye.

But somebody is after more than Earth’s defense, and Jake, Cal, and Diane are on a trajectory to crash headlong into that dangerous plot. Somebody wants to play Earth against its most immediate threat, Craton, and convince both to develop super weapons—and he’s working with the person who killed Jake’s uncle all those years ago. When he reappears on Jake, Cal, and Diane’s journey to the ambassadorship, Jake is faced with difficult choices to look out for his friends and honor his uncle’s memory.

My Review

The Author Builds the Earth United Series World in this Book. I had the opportunity to review the audiobook version of this book--and had some difficulty "seeing" the world that the author was building at first.  I found myself listening a few times to the narration before settling into the characters and the story I was hearing.  I think I was making the world more complex than it was--once I settled into the youthful characters' stories and the scenes that I was listening to--I enjoyed the interactions and the science fiction storyline.
The Brighter the Stars Brings Readers Action Packed Scenes.  While the book felt a little short, it gave some resolution to the storyline at hand and hinted toward the future.  It was well paced with interesting characters and enough side stories to keep me entertained through to the end and looking forward to Jake's future adventures and his love interest.   The book does hold  a lot of sci fi action and a little love interest--but, the author keeps it clean and appropriate for younger young adult readers.
Would I Recommend The Brighter the Stars by Bryan Prosek?  It took me a bit to settle into the narration--but, once the characters and the plot began to develop, I enjoyed listening to the story. If you are seeking a clean science fiction adventure for younger young adults, this is an entertaining start to the series.
