About the Book

In a world where magic is punishable by death, seventeen-year-old Allyria Pilar faces execution for saving a girl accused of witchcraft. Her only escape? A blood oath to the Death Dealer of Redbone, the king's most feared contract killer. Forced to bind herself to him or die in the prison of Redvine, Allyria's fate takes a dangerous turn.

Thrust into a brutal realm where survival hinges on combat, Allyria is torn from her home and trained under Cassius, the enigmatic Captain of the Death Dealer's immortal guard. Her goal: to win the deadly Elder Tournaments, a series of brutal trials that pit the most powerful fighters against each other, and earn her freedom.

But when the murder of a fae prince pushes the world to the brink of war, Allyria and the Death Dealer must join forces in a desperate bid to save their world—both human and immortal. As the stakes rise and the lines between duty and destiny blur, Allyria must navigate a war-torn land, confront her growing feelings for the Death Dealer, and decide where her true loyalties lie.

About the Book

Something strange is going down in the sleepy seaside village of Madderly Bay. Best friends Selena and Chloe are stuck in the most boring summer ever—until food starts coming to life and running wild in the streets.

But that’s just the beginning. Earthquakes start shaking the village, and creepy claw marks show up, hinting at something dark stirring beneath the waves. Only Selena and Chloe know the real story about the zombie mermaids they faced before—and now they’re worried the threat they thought was gone might be back.

As the tremors get worse and the water turns a scary green, the girls have to figure out what’s awakening in the depths before it’s too late. With their friend Zelda and her magical squid, Glowella, by their side, they’ll risk everything to save both the human and magical worlds from a danger that could destroy them all.

In this thrilling adventure, Selena and her friends have to face their fears and dig up some serious secrets between the human and magical worlds. With their village and the ocean in danger, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Can they figure out what’s messing with the sea before it’s too late? Or will they realize that saving their town—and both worlds—might be way harder than they thought?

As they approached the Undead Academy, Selena couldn't help but marvel at the massive structure. It loomed before them, all gothic spires and barnacle-covered walls. Talk about your creepy school vibes.

They swam through corridors that stretched on forever, passing classrooms that looked like something out of an underwater fever dream. Seaweed desks twisted into weird shapes. Coral chalkboards glowed with sea urchins, showing off magical equations that shimmered like disco lights.

Finally, after what felt like hours of swimming through the trippy underwater school, they reached the top of the Academy. Aunt Ada's attic chamber waited behind a trapdoor that pulsed with its own heartbeat.

Selena's stomach did a little flip as they approached. With a quick look at each other that said, "Here goes nothing," they pushed it open. A cloud of bubbles exploded around them as they swam in.

Whoa. Talk about magic overload. The water inside shimmered with an otherworldly glow, like liquid starlight. It flowed around them in swirling patterns, carrying whispers of ancient spells. As Selena swam through with Chloe and Zelda, a tingling sensation spread over her skin, as if the water was alive with magic. The whole place radiated this ethereal vibe that made the hairs on the back of Selena's neck stand up. She couldn't shake the feeling that they'd just stepped into another world entirely, where normal rules didn't apply.

Dim, shifting light filled the room, casting everything in shades of blue and green that rippled like sunlight dancing on the ocean floor. Coral shelves lined the walls, packed with jars of dried herbs, glowing potions, and ancient scrolls that murmured secrets as they shifted.

In the center of the room, a stone pedestal held a copper dish cradling the Dragon's Breath Coral. Aunt Ada hovered over it, her wrinkled hands carefully adding strands of kelp to the mix like she was cooking up some magical underwater stew. The coral pulsed with an eerie glow, looking like a mini sun had decided to take a dip.

Glowella zipped around the room, her tentacles flailing wildly, looking about as chill as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Her bioluminescent spots flashed on and off like she was trying to send an SOS in Morse code.

Convergence is The Hunger Games meets Ex Machina—a gripping YA dystopian novel that dives deep into love, consciousness, and the ethical dilemmas of AI.

If you hate predictable villains and love stories with jaw-dropping twists, morally complex characters, and thought-provoking questions, this book will captivate you.

As one reader said, "I rarely get so intrigued by something that I end up zoning out for a few moments to have a mental discussion over the morality of those implications."

Ready to question what it truly means to be human? Convergence is your next unputdownable read.

About the Book

Despite the deadly virus that caused borders to close and governments to fall ten years earlier, fourteen-year-old Charlotte and her family have lived a challenging yet relatively peaceful life, isolated on their acreage in rural Nova Scotia. However, when Charlotte discovers that an interloper has infiltrated their property, she must decide between keeping the potential threat a secret or embracing the potential for companionship that the intrusion represents. As the chaotic world that lurks outside the fence surrounding her farm disrupts Charlotte’s life even further, she must reach deep within herself and find the courage to become the mature young woman she claims to be—or risk losing everything that she and her family have worked so hard to build.

My Review

Excellent Storytelling Creates the Perfect Series Opener. I settled immediately into the author's writing style. The world she created feels real, with interesting characters and a believable plot. The author doesn't overload readers with blocks of background information; the pieces come together naturally to "fill in" the reader about the past and move the story forward. There was not a single moment of the story that was boring or confusing, or that felt silly or contrived. I was fully engaged within the first couple of pages, and I have added the series to my "watch list" so that I can continue with the next book!
Great for Parents and Tween/Teen Readers. The story is interesting as it sets up the world for the series, builds some suspense and urgency and explores the teen main character's emotions and growth. It appeals perfectly to a tween or younger teen audience but is engaging and well-developed enough for an adult audience, too—especially those who enjoy clean reads without "shock-value" add-ins! The book fits the G rating but doesn't feel childish or undeveloped.
Would I Recommend The After by J. Taylor? "The After" is a great middle-grade dystopian novel that is age-appropriate and very well-developed. The novel ends with loose ends, so you'll be adding the series to your to-be-read list and looking forward to the next book. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and will definitely look to continue the series when a new novel is released!
