About the Book

Esmeralda Dragon works the spotlight at the Metropolitan Ballet, but what she really wants to do is dance. Encouraged by her friend Harold to audition, Esmeralda takes a leap of faith only to discover that she doesn’t quite fit in with the other ballerinas. But Esmerelda isn’t ready to give up–and neither is Harold! Dragons Don’t Dance Ballet is a whimsical picture book that challenges body image expectations and encourages little ones to go for their dreams.

My Review

Dragons Don't Dance Ballet Entertains and Inspires. Esmerelda Dragon doesn't fit the usual image of a prima ballerina. With colorful, expressive illustrations and short, easy to read pages, the author & illustrator give a fun, fantasy-themed children's book a real-life moral. It is so hard for children to stay encouraged to follow their goals and dreams--especially if they face the added pressures of "not looking the part"! Children will enjoy watching Esmerelda pursue her dream of becoming a dancer--and will also be inspired by her perseverance and her friendship with Harold.

Dragons Don't Dance Ballet Offers Great Reminders to Parents and Teachers Too! As we watch Esmerelda audition for the ballet troupe, we are inspired by her drive to succeed. But--without Harold's support, she would probably not have seen the results that she earned. It is so crucial for parents, caregivers, teachers, and coaches to encourage and support children as they pursue their dreams and goals.

Would I Recommend Dragons Don't Dance Ballet by Jennifer Carson?   I love that this book gives a dragon the chance to follow her dance dreams despite who/what she is. Children are under so much pressure to "look" and "act" specific ways--even more so today with the power of social media! Dragons Don't Dance Ballet is a great book to remind children to follow their dreams--and for adults to remember to offer every child much needed encouragement and support. It's a cute, easy to read story with a huge, important, positive message.
