You will find many of the characters from the first book--but also a lot of new world-building, new adventures, and new characters--as Miles' adventure takes shape to lead the way toward future novels in the series. While you could read Miles and the Soldier out of series order--you will definitely miss a lot of the character and world development. I recommend reading the series in order and expecting to wait for the next book in the series to find more resolution to Miles and the Soldier.
Miles and the Soldier Requires Reader Focus. Even if you have read the Acre series in order, you may find that this novel's new characters and new world-building elements require a little focus to stay up to speed with the storyline. As with the previous book and novellas in the series, the author does a beautiful job creating strong characters and relationships that drive the storyline forward.
Would I Recommend Miles and the Soldier? This novel was action-packed and loaded with old and new characters to add to the series. I had trouble settling into some of the new characters and the new fantasy world elements introduced, but the relationships and story kept me engaged to the end. The story does leave readers without a lot of plot resolution--but that just means you will be ready for future books in the series. If you enjoy epic fantasies, this is proving to be an excellent series for the reading list!
