The collision between Loren’s work and Michel’s existence gives Taken by the Angel of Death an intriguing contradiction at its center. Loren’s touch is tied to death, while Michel is a vampire who cannot die despite wanting exactly that. The excerpt also establishes a world with a decidedly irreverent personality: Beelzebub is “Bubsy Baby” to Loren, vampires run the bar at Just One More, and an angel of death travels between assignments in a worn ’80 Mustang.
