Simple Tips to Create an Autumn-Inspired Book Nook

I love almost everything about fall! The moment the air shifts and that first crisp breeze rolls in, the world just seems to slow down. Leaves crunch underfoot as the trees trade their green for shades of amber, crimson, and gold. Even the sunlight feels different—softer, richer, and more fleeting as evenings arrive a little earlier.

For book lovers, the autumn season is more than just a change in weather; it’s an invitation to pause and slow down after a busy summer It's a time to grab that book you’ve been meaning to read, and create a special sanctuary just for you to enjoy the slower pace of the days ahead. Imagine a quiet corner filled with inviting pillows, warm lamplight, a favorite drink, and a snuggly, warm blanket.Your reading nook doesn’t need to be fancy--it can be just a cozy chair by the window and your book stack!

In this guide, I’ll share unique and practical ways to transform any corner of your home into a fall-inspired retreat. Along the way, I’ll recommend some cozy finds (blankets, candles, lights, mugs) that can help make your space as snug as possible.

1. Choose Your Spot with Intention

The great thing about a reading nook is that it doesn’t have to be a full room—you just need a dedicated space.

  • By a Window: If possible, pick a spot with natural light. There’s something magical about watching leaves drift down while sipping tea with a book in hand.
  • Tucked Away: If you crave privacy, consider a corner of your bedroom or beside your bookshelf.

If you aren't lucky enough to have a built-in window seat, you can create a cozy feel with an accent chair, like this Christopher Knight Home Armchair on Amazon or the woven accent chair from Target.

I have a "reading chair"--named by my daughters when they were very little. It was the spot to pile in every day for storytime--and, while my little ones are not so little anymore--it's still the spot for everyone to curl up with a good book!

2. Layer with Cozy Textures

Fall decorating is all about texture. Tosscozy plaid throw like this one from Amazon across your chair and add an extra fleece or faux-fur blanket for depth. The chunky hand knit throw feels like wrapping yourself in pure fall comfort.

Don’t forget pillows! Simple corduroy pillow covers or a plaid throw pillow from Target make your nook look seasonal and inviting without trying too hard. I have a stack of pillow covers that I use to change up the look of my room without needing to store big, bulky pillows!

3. Lighting: The Warm Glow of Autumn

Lighting completely sets the mood. Overhead bulbs are too harsh—opt for ambient lighting instead.

I like to weave warm-toned fairy lights into a bookshelf for a twinkly storybook vibe. Add a soft lamp and a few candles to warm up the space.

For a soft candle glow and scent, a pumpkin candle with spicy chai & vanilla or this warm cider & cinnamon candle from Target bring fall scents into your reading corner.

If open flames and candle scents aren’t your thing, I swear by the LED flameless candle set from Target—I find these much safer in my cat-loving home!

4. Bring in Nature: Seasonal Accents

A few small touches of nature go a long way: pumpkins on the windowsill, acorns and pine cones in a bowl, or a framed display of pressed leaves. Personally, I decorate with natural elements year around, but I still love bringing in fall-specific touches as the season changes.

For function and style, rustic wooden crates can double as a side table or storage. Or, if you need more blanket/book storage, this large cotton rope basket is perfect—and looks gorgeous next to a chair.

5. Curate Your Book Stack

Autumn reading calls for a seasonal book stack—whether that means cozy mysteries, gothic thrillers, or romantic fall novels. Keep them close by on your side table or tucked into a woven basket. You can always check out my latest book stack on Instagram or Pinterest!

To make your little library stylish, these tree design bookends bring a subtle nature vibe. Or, you could keep your pile stored in the cotton rope basket mentioned above—perfect for quick swaps of your TBR pile.

6. Don’t Forget the Snacks & Drinks

A cozy nook isn’t complete without refreshments--so put that decorative side table to use in your reading space and add some fun fall-themed accessories!

7. Personal Touches

Finally, style your nook with you. Frame favorite book quotes, put down a plush rug under your chair, or keep a refillable leather journal notebook like this one nearby for notes and reading reflections.

One of my favorite little luxuries is adding literary-inspired candle sets so even the scent feels bookish.

Share Your Nook

That’s how I like to make a cozy fall reading nook, but I’d love to see yours! Do you go all out with fairy lights and plaid pillows, or keep it minimalist and natural?

Remember...

Creating a cozy fall reading nook isn’t about spending a lot—it’s about choosing details that make you feel comfortable and inspired: a chunky throw, flickering lights, a mug of cider, and your favorite stack of books.

With a few thoughtful touches, you’ll have a space that feels like pure autumn magic

Happy fall reading!

About the Book

Frustrated novelist Danny is resigned to writing material for trade shows, promoting garage doors and non-stick cookware. His ex-wife threatens legal action for non-payment of alimony. Danny never dreamed the answer to his troubles could be larceny.
But then wealthy, charming Packard Hale III reenters his life. He was Danny's college roommate, and like Lupin and Raffles, he now fancies himself a gentleman thief. Packard hires Danny to write about his capers.

Danny follows Packard as they break into a mansion and steal, among other things, a priceless Chinese vase and a curiously valuable souvenir blanket from Branson, Missouri. However, it's not Packard who is pursued by the police, but Danny.

Simultaneously, he struggles to please his client, a lawn-and-garden CEO with an erotic attraction to lawnmowers. Danny also endures abuse from Soren, a boozy has-been Vegas magician. He tolerates the mistreatment because of Crystal, the magician's assistant. He's falling for her.

When he learns Soren screwed Crystal out of rights to magic tricks she's created -- and in spite of the cops on his tail -- Danny plots revenge. He and Packard attempt the daring theft of a state-of-the-art lawnmower—during a live performance in front of 400 people.

My Review

Expect to smile from beginning to end as you read The Gentleman Thief Steals a Blanket. The book starts with silliness as readers meet Packard and experience the characteristic banter that will persist throughout the book. The novel is heavy on dialogue--and this back-and-forth dialogue is full of silliness and humor that will spark eye rolls, head shakes, and full-on laughter. My daughter likes to say, with her favorite, made-up word, "It was so un-serious," when she reads or watches something where the characters fall into one misadventure after another in perfect comedic timing — and this book offers that rolling flow of smiles from beginning to end.

Bumbling Characters Drive the Storyline.  The characters are loveable, laughable, endearing victims of chance and mishaps that just drive a fun story. You will root for happy endings--and laugh at the situations from all character angles as you move through the story.  It's impossible to dislike Danny or Packard--or even the detectives tasked with justice. Every scene connects well to offer silliness and fun, but also connects just as well to give readers a complete story and a satisfying ending.

Would I Recommend The Gentleman Thief Steals a Blanket by Mark Nutter? If you enjoy light reads, cozy mysteries, and comedies that are well-organized enough to hold a plot while throwing silly antics left and right--this is a very entertaining novel for your reading list. If you want a serious crime novel--this isn't it--but, if you want to step back and slip into a silly misadventure that will keep you entertained from beginning to end, give this book a spot on your reading list.

My Review

The Author Offers Well-Done Short Stories. The author is an excellent storyteller, with a gift for portraying a variety of characters at various stages of life's journey in ways that feel very real and authentic. While the stories in this book are brief, making them ideal for readers short on time or attention, they never feel too brief or incomplete. Each story is very well-developed, realistic and complete. While the stories are full and engaging, some will hold your attention beyond the last page.

Expect Wonderful Characters. The author creates characters that are very real, relatable, and believable. While you may not like all of them--their development and portrayal serve strong purposes in each story.

Would I Recommend Corners of My Mind by Travis E. Short? I love short stories — especially those that feel complete and fully engage the reader. The author finds stories everywhere around him and turns them into pieces that readers will want to read and characters readers will want to know more about. About the Book

1242. Wounded and captured after the Battle on the Ice, English knight Richard Fitz Simon becomes the unlikely guest of Prince Alexander Nevsky of Novgorod. Curious about his prisoner, Alexander commands his scholar to record Richard’s tale.

Richard’s story begins in 1203, when betrayal shatters his path to knighthood and drives him from England to the merchant city of Lübeck. There, entangled in an illicit affair and the cutthroat salt trade, he finds only temporary refuge. Fleeing once again, he joins the Livonian Brothers of the Sword—a militant order sworn to spread Christendom across the pagan Baltic.

Amid the cold austerity of Riga’s commandery and the looming threat of enemy tribes, Richard must battle not just for survival, but for meaning in a life shaped by violence, doubt, and fractured loyalties. When a pagan army threatens to overrun their outpost, he faces a final reckoning—one that will test his faith, his honor, and the limits of his courage.
