About the Book

How far will a man go to save his very soul?

Derek Hollinger has walked a long, hard road since a fateful encounter with an Indigenous shaman woman turned his life upside down. Now married to Kendal, his angel and savior, Derek desperately wants to be the man she deserves. But his obsession with his tattoos—what they mean and how to get rid of them—is tearing down everything they’ve built together.

Paralyzed by depression and self-loathing, Derek is convinced that only one person can help him now: the granddaughter of the shaman whose power inked him from head to toe. Enlisting the aid of his loyal friend and spiritual advisor, Father Mike, Derek treks deep into the heart of the Amazon jungle, where a final reckoning between good and evil awaits.

But God’s plan for Derek isn’t what he expects. And coming back alive—whole in mind, heart, and spirit—will require every ounce of his fortitude and faith.

Historical Fiction Review: Anna by Travis E. Short

About the Book

Anna's story begins and ends in a convalescent center in Michigan and is told by the author, whose brother looks after her in her waning years. The story is based on a short memoir written by Anna for her children. Her life is filled with trials and tribulations that test her faith to its limits. With a desperately impoverished and undernourished childhood in an itinerant and abusive family living in rural Pennsylvania, Anna is faced with obstacles that could break most people. She finds solace in God with constant prayer and attendance in church services. Although she has little formal education, she is nominated by her pastor to attend bible college. where she excels and meets her future husband. They start a family and despite their own hardships, they devote their lives to helping others. Her powerful story of sacrifice, faith, and courage is an inspiration to us all.
My Review

Expect an Inspirational, Emotional, Faith-Filled Look at Anna's Life. While creating a fictionalized version of Anna's life, the author does an excellent job keeping Anna's story grounded in her real-life courage, faith and values. This grounding creates a novel that feels honest, realistic, and inspiring. Anna faced difficulties and challenges in her life--but her faith and strength of character pulled her through and moved her to navigate her own path and also to serve others in need. Anna's story is not of a famous person--but of a relatable woman who used her faith in God to guide her in life. Anna's story is an emotional one, but one that will not lift you in some way as you watch her overcome very difficult obstacles and decisions.

Anna is a Clean Read with A Strong Storyline. The author keeps Anna's story clean and faith-driven, focusing on the main character's strength and perseverance. While the main character faced difficulties and situations that were at times heartbreaking, the story keeps the spirit of the uplifting messages that Anna likely offered in her own memoir.

Would I Recommend Anna by Travis E. Short? I love memoirs and fictionalized novels based on true events and real people. While this novel, again, isn't based on a celebrity or a well-known motivational speaker or such, the author chose a wonderful, faithful character to highlight for readers. Anna's life focused on God and her faith--with decisions and her path being driven by that faith. If you are a Christian reader, you will find Anna's story faith-strengthening and empowering. However, if you are not a believer, you will still gain powerful messages from Anna's story and her giving nature and strength in moral character--without feeling overburdened by religious messages. Stories like Anna's are always worth a spot on the reading list, and I enjoyed this well-written novel very much.

About the Book

Everyone said the sky could never fall. They were wrong.

In the year 2076, anti-gravity has ushered in a new era of peace, prosperity, and worldwide collaboration. Powered by the scientific marvel known as Persistence, aerial vehicles now replace roads, energy comes from ambient particles, and the world’s nations are connected by open skies and their reverence for The Fabric — the timeless, interconnected thread of all particles, past and future, that not only powers anti-gravity but redefines humanity’s understanding of the presence of God.

But on an ordinary October morning, the impossible happens: passenger aerials start dropping/falling from the sky.

For Jack Woods, a national security official and devoted father, this tragedy is more than a historic anomaly. His son Erik was airborne when the world stopped. As aerials freeze mid-air across the globe like ticking timebombs and chaos erupts below/the death toll rises by the millions, Jack races to uncover what went wrong… and who may be responsible.

Meanwhile, Brian Medlock, the scientist who discovered anti gravity, prepares to leave this world only to be pulled into a political and spiritual firestorm threatening to unravel everything he built.

Blending science, political intrigue, and the primal human emotions that keep us grounded/connect us, Taming the Perilous Skies is a haunting look at a future world/ riveting journey through a world reliant/dependent on technology, and the people who must fight to save it/will stop at nothing to save it when it begins to unravel/falls apart. And how easily it can all fall apart.

My Review

Taming the Perilous Skies by Phil Marshall Builds Slowly--But is Worth the Wait. I had a hard time settling into the drama and connecting the characters initially, as the author built his science fiction thriller. Once I organized the characters and the elements of science and crisis came together, the novel was very engaging, interesting, and well-paced through to the end. There are characters to love and hate--sometimes at the same time--that seem realistic and relatable as they move through the various scenes of the novel. As for the scenes of the book, the science and human nature blend well--once the elements connect--to create a believable, thought-provoking plot.

Taming the Perilous Skies Offers a Great Blend of Science, Mystery, and Political Thrills. For fans of political thrillers and rush-to-save-the-world science fiction adventures, this novel offers a perfect blend of both that doesn't create a tedious storyline in either respect. The science fiction angles are believable and well-developed to fit the twists and turns of the thriller as the plot moves along. I enjoy dystopian fiction--but sometimes find science fiction too focused on unbelievable science. This book is not overly scientific or overly political--it is a well-balanced blend of thriller, science, and human responses.

Would I Recommend Taming the Perilous Skies? I enjoyed the book once I settled into the world and the character connections. I did have some difficulty with that initially, but once the pieces clicked together, I really enjoyed the twists, turns and resolution of the novel. If you like believable science fiction that edges into philosophy, spirituality, thrills and drama--this is a book that is well worth a spot on your reading list.

About the Book

Why does the selfish succeed while the kind suffer? This question has haunted humanity for centuries—but what if it’s the wrong question entirely?

In this deeply thought-provoking book, author Vu Do invites readers to explore the hidden patterns behind life’s seeming injustices. Drawing from philosophy, spirituality, and the laws of nature, he reveals a universe built not on fairness, but on balance—where light needs darkness, and struggle conceals blessings.

Discover:

* Why good and bad are not opposites—but partners

* How the concept of duality shapes every experience

* The meaning behind suffering, delay, and paradox

* How to find peace in what once felt unfair

This is not a book of answers. It’s a book of deeper seeing. A quiet revolution for the soul who dares to question the surface—and trust what lies beneath.

About the Author

Vu M. Do is a writer, thinker, and keen observer of life’s paradoxes. Grounded in daily meditation, he explores the balance between light and shadow, meaning and mystery: a passionate tea enthusiast and gardener who loves Japanese maple trees. He values the beauty of simplicity and finds wisdom in silence. He lives by the philosophy that less is more. His work reflects a curiosity about duality, justice, and the fundamental rhythms that shape human life.
