about the book

Carley Mathers isn’t just the “party girl” daughter of a congressman. She’s more. But these days, in a world of fake friends, she’s determined to keep only true ones close. Because she puts them at arm’s length, her classmates at college refer to her as “The Snob.” But she comes from wealth and means -- she shouldn’t be able to mix with her bodyguard, right?

Dacre Jennings has been given the job of protecting Carley while she’s off at college. The same classmates who make light of her silence also make fun of him, too. He doesn’t care that they think she lives with the old man. He’d rather she lived with him than alone. He sees the real woman, and he’s been in love with her for as long as he’s worked for the family.

With threats on her life, Dacre refuses to let Carley be used or abused. He’ll put his life on the line for her, as long as he knows he’s got her heart as well.

about the book

Amid the vibrant landscape of San Francisco in the late 1960s, eleven-year-old Jamie steps into the confines of a dark confessional booth. With promises of confidentiality, Father Nelson uncovers a chilling secret buried deep within the young boy’s subconscious.

Intrigued by his grave past, Father Nelson brings him into the church as an altar boy under the mentorship of Harry, an older acolyte. The priest quickly gains control over Jamie, using the boy’s complicated history and his own undisputed authority to initiate a dark turn in their relationship. Jamie falls deeper into the world of religion, and his blooming friendship with Harry becomes a needed distraction from the somber realities of the church.

Shaped by major cultural events, from the Manson murders to the moon landing, to Woodstock and the Civil Rights Movement, Jamie’s life unfolds as he navigates religion, power, and loss of innocence. A haunting coming of age story, Boy Altared explores a seismic shift into adulthood during one of the most turbulent decades in history.

about the author

J.S. Pavoggi was born in 1957 and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, the sixth of eight children in a devout Catholic family. He attended parochial school, served as an altar boy, and came of age during the turbulence of the Vietnam War era and the cultural upheaval that followed.

After a 40-year career in public service with the United States Postal Service—where he also served as a union representative—Pavoggi experienced a life-altering heart procedure that changed the way he saw the world. What began as an impulse to write a better streaming series evolved into a powerful, fictionalized account of survival and healing.

His debut novel, Boy Altared, is a deeply personal work of historical fiction rooted in memory, silence, and resilience. Pavoggi lives in Arizona with his wife of 38 years. They have three children and four grandchildren.

about the book

It is 1928, and the future is unwritten.

When widowed Professor Horace Jennings reluctantly volunteers to search for a missing student, he trades Rhode Island for the West Coast. This isn’t Providence; this is Los Angeles. And as his hired detective warns him, bootleggers, museum thieves, and crooked cops are no company for a sherry-sipping professor and his precocious protégé, Helen Parker.

But the truly dangerous characters aren’t criminals.

In fact, they aren’t even human.

Shila Ghiss, a scientist from a subterranean race, desires only to experience daylight. One day, she gets her chance—if she is willing to help reclaim the surface from humanity. She’ll need to become human, to learn about powerplants, facial expressions, and hair care. She’ll need to do something awful. But her mentor and his followers are planning to do something far worse—something apocalyptic.

To save both species, she’ll have to work closely with these bizarre, unpredictable humans and become both traitor and savior. She’ll have to decide who she is, and which native species will write the future.

my review

Native Species: A Tale of Two Civilizations in 1928 Los Angeles is fast paced and easy to readIt took a little while for me to settle into the various perspectives and angles of the story--and I will admit I wasn't sure that the author could successfully pull off such a contrast between civilizations. That worry was short lived, through as the story grew. This novel moves quickly without ever feeling overwhelming, and I liked how it balances action with very thoughtful worldbuilding. The mix of historical elements and science fiction works well, especially because the sci-fi never feels too complicated or hard to follow. Everything stays grounded enough to feel believable, which made it easy to stay connected to the story. The setting is also well done—it feels clear the author put care into making it immersive.

Expect characters to love (and hate). The characters were another strong point for me. I cringed through pages with Sesh and the King. Shila was definitely my favorite—she felt real (and ironically quite human) and added a lot of emotional depth to the story. The rest of the cast also fits well together, each playing a meaningful role without making things feel crowded. I also appreciated how the romance was handled. I don’t always love romance in science fiction, but here it felt natural and didn’t take away from the main storyline.

Would I recommend Native Species by Michael Albergo? Overall, I’d recommend this book. Native Species is an entertaining, interesting, fast-paced read that blends genres and offers a strong sense of place. I did feel like the story's ending was a bit rushed and could have been a little more developed, but it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment. It’s a solid historical, science fiction read that I think a lot of people will enjoy.

about the book

Mother Nature struggles to maintain equilibrium in a changing world while fire, disease, logging, human displacement, and war repeatedly destroy forests of centuries-old trees. Split Toe, a deer chosen at birth for a unique education, travels through time to understand the interconnected workings of a Michigan forest. He meets humans along the way: Ice Age hunters who trap and kill a mastodon; Mukwoh, a young Ojibwe hunter who stalks Split Toe through swamp and forest; loggers clearcutting Michigan’s white pines; Edra, a woman advocating for the trees; Angus and Grace, pioneers who become a first generation of family farmers; scientists from the future studying the impact of nuclear radiation.

Split Toe witnesses two hundred years of conflict building between modern humans -- who fight to control the natural world -- and Mother Nature, who repeatedly reaches for balance. He wonders whether human ways will ultimately overpower Mother Nature, until he meets a boy who changes everything.

Children's Book Blitz: Rhea and Crowley by G.D. Griffiths

Stories that stay with children often do more than entertain—they give them a safe place to explore big feelings in small, meaningful ways. The kind of story that can be read together one night and revisited later with new understanding.

At its heart, this one leans into quiet bravery—the kind that shows up in uncertain moments, in unlikely friendships, and in learning how to face fears without having to be fearless. There’s a warmth here that feels approachable for younger readers, while still offering enough depth to grow alongside them.

Blending adventure with emotional connection, this story invites readers into a journey where courage looks different for everyone—and where even the smallest steps forward matter.

about the author

G.D's storytelling spark was ignited in the hallowed land of Wales, where his childhood was spent exploring the sea until the legendary midnight summer twilight. His journey led him through academia, earning degrees in Computer Science and Operations Management, culminating in a PhD focused on Virtual Reality.

While pursuing his studies in Nottingham, he met his wife. Together, their spirit of adventure took them first to New Zealand, where G.D worked in the video game industry and taught Scuba Diving. A seemingly simple job inquiry brought them to California, a place they planned to "try for one year," and where they still reside almost fourteen years later in Redondo Beach.

The family, which welcomed their son in 2012, is completed by Rhea, their quirky German Shepherd. Rhea became the key inspiration for G.D's first book, ABC's With Rhea, A doggy journey through the alphabet. Having observed that children learn best through stories, G.D wrote this book to craft a specific, relatable world for each letter, encouraging children to connect deeply with the subject.

He has recently published his second book, Olly's Journey, and is already hard at work weaving new tales and adventures for his readers.

G.D's mission is to empower children to pursue their own creative writing journey.

Why You Connect to Some Books in Ways You Can’t Explain

Someone asks, "So what was the book about?"--and you hesitate before responding—not because you didn't understand the book, but because whatever you say is going to sound smaller than what it actually felt like. You try anyway. You mention the writing, maybe the characters, maybe something vague like "it just worked for me." But even as you're saying it, you can tell that's not really it.

connecting with a good book

If that's ever happened to you, there's probably a reason—and it has more to do with how you read than what you read.

You're drawn to the atmosphere as much as the story.

You tend to notice the tone beneath the surface of a scene, not just what's happening on the surface. It's the emotional weight behind the character conversations that draws you in, along with the way tension builds gradually rather than relying on big, dramatic moments. Even when the plot itself is simple, that sense of being inside the characters' world is what really keeps you invested in turning the pages.

You hold onto the small moments more than the big ones.

It's often not the major twists or action-packed scenes that stay with you. It's a line that felt refreshingly honest, a subtle interaction between main characters, or a moment that could be easily overlooked--but wasn't. Those are the things that make a story feel real to you—even if they're the hardest parts to explain to someone else later.

You sit with a book before you try to explain it.

You're not in a rush to break a story down the second you finish it. You tend to replay certain moments, reflect on how it all felt, and let it all settle in your mind a bit. So when someone asks for your thoughts right away, it can feel like you're being asked to explain something you're still processing.

When something works, it feels personal.

Now and then, a book lines up with something in you in a way that's hard to define. It might reflect a mood, a thought, or a point of view you didn't even realize you were carrying. It's not always obvious, and it's not always something you can point to—but you can feel it when it happens.

What stays with you is an overall feeling, not the story's details.

You might forget some of the book's specifics over time—the order of events, smaller plot happenings, even certain character names. But you don't forget how the book felt while you were reading it (and how it lingered after). That mood, that pull to keep going, the moments that hold you a little longer than expected—that's what sticks.

Not every book you love is going to come with a clear explanation, and it doesn't need one. Some stories stay with you in ways that don't translate easily into words—and that's part of what makes them matter.

Have you ever tried to explain a book you loved and felt like you weren't quite getting it right? What stayed with you—the story itself, or the way it made you feel?
