True Crime Review: Delaware Behaving Badly by Dave Tabler

I enjoy history and true crime, so the latest book from author Dave Tabler was perfect for my reading list! Learn about Delaware Behaving Badly, read my thoughts on the book and enter for a chance to win a prize in the book tour giveaway at the end of this post.

about the book

Delaware Behaving Badly is a gripping, true-crime-inflected history of the First State's darker moments-scandals, betrayals, and criminal exploits that once made headlines but have since faded from public memory. Drawing on newspaper accounts, court records, and archival materials, author Dave Tabler uncovers stories that range from oyster pirate skirmishes and Prohibition-era rumrunning to political corruption, violent revenge, and fraudulent wartime schemes.

The book brings to life the eccentric figures and forgotten corners of Delaware's past with scene-driven storytelling and deep research. Among the cases covered: a 19th-century embezzler who vanished with bank funds and turned up in Havana; a Prohibition enforcer accused of moonlighting as a bootlegger; a serial predator released on furlough who assaulted again; and a bookie war that upended Wilmington's underworld. Each chapter presents a standalone narrative, but together they form a mosaic of lawlessness, defiance, and the uneasy intersection between crime and power.

Avoiding myth and conjecture, Tabler grounds his accounts in documented fact, often quoting directly from contemporary sources to preserve the raw tone and urgency of the times. Though the crimes differ in scope and era, they all reveal something essential about Delaware's legal system, social tensions, and the limits of justice.

Meticulously curated and written in a crisp, journalistic style, Delaware Behaving Badly does not seek moral closure or tidy resolutions. Instead, it invites readers to confront the discomforting truth that bad behavior-official and unofficial-has always found its place even in the quietest corners of America. This is Delaware history stripped of its polish and presented with an unflinching eye.

my review

Expect to settle easily into the book's format & the author's writing style. Dave Tabler’s book is written in a clear, easy-to-follow style that makes the history engaging rather than monotonous. The book is broken into individual crime stories, so each chapter reads quickly--but, still gives plenty of detail. Tabler blends historical facts with storytelling, keeping the book moving at a steady pace. Newspaper clippings, court records, and background information help bring the cases to life without making the book feel too heavy or academic. The shorter chapter format also makes it easy to pick up and read a few stories at a time.

Tabler gives readers a lot of information in short chapters. One of the strongest parts of the book is how the author looks beyond just the crimes themselves. Instead of focusing solely on shocking moments, Tabler also discusses the social issues associated with each case, including politics, corruption, prejudice, and problems within the justice system. Each crime tells readers something different about Delaware’s history and how society responded at the time. The author keeps a balanced tone throughout the book and does a good job explaining why these cases mattered, both then and now. That extra discussion gives the stories more depth and makes the book feel more meaningful than a simple collection of crime stories.

Would I recommend Delaware Behaving Badly by Dave Tabler? I would definitely recommend this book to readers who enjoy true crime, history, or nonfiction focused on real events. Even if you do not know much about Delaware history, the cases are interesting enough to keep your attention from start to finish. The combination of strong research, easy-to-read writing, and a wide variety of cases makes this a very enjoyable read overall. Some stories stand out more than others, but the book stays consistently engaging throughout, making it a solid read for fans of historical true crime.

meet the author

Ten year old Dave Tabler decided he was going to read the ‘R’ volume from the family’s World Book Encyclopedia set over summer vacation. He never made it from beginning to end. He did, however, become interested in Norman Rockwell, rare-earth elements, and Run for the Roses.

Tabler’s father encouraged him to try his hand at taking pictures with the family camera. With visions of Rockwell dancing in his head, Tabler press-ganged his younger brother into wearing a straw hat and sitting next to a stream barefoot with a homemade fishing pole in his hand. The resulting image was terrible.

Dave Tabler went on to earn degrees in art history and photojournalism despite being told he needed a ‘Plan B.'

Fresh out of college, Tabler contributed the photography for “The Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics,” which taught him how to work with museum curators, collectors, and white cotton gloves. He met a man in the Shenandoah Valley who played the musical saw, a Knoxville fellow who specialized in collecting barbed wire, and Tom Dickey, brother of the man who wrote ‘Deliverance.’

In 2006 Tabler circled back to these earlier encounters with Appalachian culture as an idea for a blog. AppalachianHistory.net today reaches 375,000 readers a year.

Dave Tabler moved to Delaware in 2010 and became smitten with its rich past. He no longer copies Norman Rockwell, but his experience working with curators and collectors came in handy when he got the urge to photograph a love letter to Delaware’s early heritage. This may be the start of something.

Political Nonfiction Blitz: USA v. RAJ by Dr. Raj Bothra

Today, I have a political nonfiction novel to share! Learn about USA v. RAJ and author Dr. Raj Bothra!

The Truth Behind One of This Nation’s Biggest False Arrest & Imprisonment Scandals

Political Nonfiction

about the book

USA v Raj is a MUST READ, INSPIRING TRUE STORY now available in paperback with a motion picture by BOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD PRODUCTION coming summer 2026. This tell-all memoir dares to share the truth behind one of the biggest federal false arrest and imprisonment scandals of the decade. This is a story about federal government corruption and a broken judiciary that turns innocent people into convicted criminals with their unchecked power and weaponized obsession with winning at any cost.

This is also an innocent man's story of gratitude, steadfast faith, and endurance to persevere until the end of a war waged against him. Imagine being an immigrant from India who worked hard and lived by integrity for 50 years to achieve his American dream. Then, imagine waking up one morning to an indictment that leads to a three-and-a-half-year period of unlawful detention and torture. The pages within retrace my journey to become a renowned surgeon, interventional pain specialist, and activist for just causes and my fight to survive my false arrest and 1301-day imprisonment, which led to a unanimous acquittal by a jury at trial.

May you be encouraged as this story leads you through the many twists and turns of a grueling experience marked by trials, tribulations, and, ultimately, triumphs.

HOW COULD THIS INJUSTICE HAPPEN IN AMERICA?

1. It is alarming that anyone can be indicted by a grand jury and arrested solely based on the government's allegations that exclude the accused and their counsel from being present or even aware of the accusations.

2. The FBI and U.S. Attorney built their alleged fraud case without ever doing a single required Medicare audit in their five-year investigation.

3. Once arrested, the five other defendants with the same exact charges were immediately released on bond the same day. While I was denied bail and imprisoned for three-and-a-half years awaiting trial—a violation of the 6th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the right to a speedy trial.

4. Also, the two defendants who accepted a PLEA DEAL in exchange for leniency never spent a single night in prison despite their admission of guilt. I chose to go to trial and was unanimously acquitted by a 12-member jury on all 54 counts, yet still I spent 1301 days in prison.

YES, THIS HAPPENED IN AMERICA. NEXT COULD BE ANYBODY, YOU INCLUDED.

The very bedrock of U.S. justice has been turned upside down, where the belief that you are INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY has become you are GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT. I have just one question for the guardians of justice: How will my own government return back the time and milestones they stole from me, my wife, and my daughter? Such injustices happen in banana republics not in America, the most powerful and oldest democracy in the world. WE MUST DO BETTER.

about the author

Dr. Raj Bothra is a surgeon, interventional pain expert, activist, author, and survivor of one of America's biggest false arrest and imprisonment scandals. A native of a rural town in India, he earned medical degrees in India, England, and the U.S. During his time as a surgeon in Detroit, he built a single-owner private practice that became the nation's largest interventional pain management system (The Pain Center, USA, and Interventional Pain Center). He's worked with important public figures, including Indian prime ministers, U.S. presidents, Mother Teresa, and Pope John Paul II. Indian President Narayanan awarded him the high civilian honor of PADMA SHRI and he’s received numerous awards in India and the U.S. for his public service.

Nonfiction Finance Book Blitz: Lifecycle of Nations by Steve Jones

Global economics can often feel complicated and unpredictable, but what if there were patterns behind how nations grow and develop? Lifecycle of Nations by Steve Jones explores the idea that economies move through recognizable stages, shaping how countries trade, innovate, and interact on the world stage.

Blending economic history with modern geopolitical insight, the book offers readers a broader perspective on how global markets evolve and why cooperation between nations plays such an important role in long-term prosperity.

For readers interested in global economics, international trade, and the forces shaping today’s geopolitical landscape, Lifecycle of Nations offers a thought-provoking perspective on how the world’s economies grow and change over time. If this topic sparks your curiosity, be sure to check out the book and learn more about the ideas behind its economic framework.

about the book

In a world fractured by tariff wars, rising protectionism, and geopolitical rivalry, Steve Jones offers something different: a structured framework for understanding how economies truly evolve, and how nations can grow together rather than apart.

In Lifecycle of Nations, Jones introduces a five-stage Maturity Model for Economies and Markets, from nascent, resource-dependent nations to post-industrial, innovation-led consumer economies. Drawing on economic history, modern case studies, and the defining lessons of the 20th century, he argues that countries do not rise randomly. They progress through identifiable stages, each with distinct pressures, trade dynamics, and strategic responsibilities.

Readers will see how collaborative trade built prosperity after World War II, and how protectionism repeatedly undermines it. From Adam Smith and David Ricardo to the repeal of the Corn Laws, from the Smoot–Hawley Tariff to President Reagan’s warnings against trade wars, history provides unmistakable evidence: nations prosper most when they specialize, exchange, and respect comparative advantage.

Through case studies of China, the United States, Germany, India, Vietnam and others, Jones maps where countries sit today, and why the language of “reciprocal tariffs” must give way to a deeper understanding of “reciprocal needs.”

More than theory, this book serves as a diagnostic tool for policymakers, investors, business leaders, scholars, and engaged citizens seeking clarity in a fractured, multi-nodal global order.

The global economy functions best not when nations compete to win alone, but when they recognize that prosperity is shared.

Lifecycle of Nations is both a map and a mirror for the 21st century.

BONUS ~ Readers also receive access to a complimentary mini-book, Churchill’s Leadership Lessons from American Presidents, distilling five timeless principles Churchill drew from Washington, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Truman — leadership insights that shaped Allied victory, built the post-war world order and remain urgently relevant today.

about the author

Steve Jones is an Economist, Entrepreneur, Historian, and International Analyst and Commentator on geopolitics, trade, and global governance. He is the business, marketing, and economic author of All to One – The Winning Model for Marketing in the Post-Internet Economy by McGraw Hill. Steve has advised governments, multinational institutions, and think tanks, and is known for his incisive, evidence-based critiques of the international system.

Following a successful blue-chip corporate career with British Airways, EDS, Avis, and Accenture, he founded a children’s sports education business, Sport4Kids. Inspired by the current global crises, rising trade wars, and his son’s fascination with economics, Churchill, FDR, and the rules-based world order, Steve began writing a new series of books exploring the origins of global governance and today’s geopolitical challenges.

The Churchill World Order Series looks at how world trade and the post-World War 2, multi-lateral, world order was created in response to the 20th Century world crisis and how it is challenged today. It also looks to take lessons from history to understand today’s challenges and how we can use concepts, philosophies and frameworks to address current leadership and global issues moving forward.

Steve hopes that connecting the past with present-day challenges will provide fresh insight and potential solutions. His ideas include a re-imagined Atlantic Charter — a Pacific Charter between Trump and Xi — and a vision for a Neo Multi-Nodal World Order.

Beyond geopolitics, Steve is also a sports education innovator through Sport4Kids and the author of Fitness for Living. After years as a CEO launching world-class brands, a once-active sportsman had shifted into a sedentary lifestyle. His journey back to health and fitness forms the foundation of Fitness for Living. Today, Steve is passionate about building a community of adults who inspire each other to “fight the good fight” and grow younger together each year.

Christian Non-Fiction Spotlight: The Eternal Flame and The Children of the Promise by PJ Patrick Flynn

about the book

The Eternal Flame and the Children of the Promise traces the thread of God's covenant promises through Scripture and history, showing how the "eternal flame" of God's purpose has been guarded, opposed, and carried forward to our own generation. It is written for thoughtful lay believers and seekers, pastors, and small group leaders who feel the weight of current events and want to test every headline against the unshakeable promises of God rather than speculation or fear.

Drawing on careful biblical exegesis, historical research, and engagement with contemporary scholarship, it seeks to equip readers to recognize the patterns of God's dealings with His people, discern the times without sensationalism, and anchor their hope where Scripture does: in the faithfulness of the One who calls Himself "the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."

By the end, readers will better understand where we are in the story of redemption—and what it means to live as children of the promise in an age of upheaval.

about the author

PJ Patrick Flynn is a retired public school administrator, teacher, and environmental consultant. She lives in the Sierra Nevada mountains, surrounded by animals and books, writing in the quiet of a high country retreat.

A seventh generation Californian, she descends from a family with more than 420 years on American soil, beginning with early arrivals to Massachusetts in the early 1600s. From the Mayflower through the Revolutionary, Civil, and World Wars, her ancestors fought for freedom, trekking across the continent over generations of Manifest Destiny to the final frontier—California in the 1800s.

Her great grandfathers helped shape the Los Angeles basin in the early 1900s as it grew from a town of a few thousand into a major metropolis. One founded an early auto parts enterprise that later folded into what became the NAPA Auto Parts distribution system, and was a 33rd degree Freemason and 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason; the other built many of the public schools of Long Beach—campuses she would encounter again a century later when her own career in school business leadership ended amid the battle over their reconstruction.

That civic legacy extended through her grandfathers and close kin. One grandfather served in the U.S. Navy and spent three decades as an engineer in Lockheed’s Skunk Works, contributing to the secretive aerospace projects that defined the Cold War era. Another served in the Navy in the Second World War and later became a Superior Court judge for Island and San Juan Counties in Washington State. A maternal uncle spent ten years in the U.S. Coast Guard before rising to vice president of foreign research and development for Occidental Petroleum, and a maternal aunt served for twenty seven years as director of research within the orbit of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Her father developed historic ranches in California and Nevada and worked in Republican politics alongside Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, and Richard Nixon, later authoring two books about his time with Reagan. Until his death in 2024, he remained active in local affairs, modeling a life of engagement at the intersection of land, liberty, and public service.

It is against this backdrop of faith, sacrifice, and civic engagement that she writes today. Politics, corporate development, international organizations, Freemasonry, law, the military and its industrial complex, history, land use development, and construction all appear in her extended family story, providing a living case study of the very systems traced in this book. These ancestral strands—crossing boardrooms, bases, courtrooms, campuses, and covenants—form the soil from which her understanding of global forces has grown, and the lens through which she explores genealogy, power, and promise in The Eternal Flame and the Children of the Promise.
