About the Book

“It was 1978. People didn’t have home computers, video players, or answering machines. We rented our telephones from local phone companies and hand-wrote letters. The terms ‘politically correct’ and ‘African-American’ had not been coined. ‘Eating disorders’ and ‘alternate lifestyles’ were not yet common household phrases. Only strippers wore thongs, which made perfect sense to me, as they only caused one to gyrate their hynie in a desperate attempt to dislodge the bothersome wedgie.”

So writes Sherri Van Ness, an unassuming girl from the burbs of Kansas who’s about to embark on the adventure of her life when she signs up to become a stewardess. But it’s much more turbulent than this doughy-eyed 19-year-old ever imagined as she tries to navigate past grouchy passengers, fly-by-night relationships and the unforgiving, relentless, humiliating, monthly weigh-ins. Some dreams come true. Others require a vomit bag.

That’s not to say Sherri doesn’t enjoy herself. Au contraire! There are friends to be made and men to be made and the maid who made up her room in New York is so nice!

Yes, the work is difficult at times and the money isn’t always good, but there are perks: free flights and an endless supply of tiny vodka bottles and salted peanuts (peanut allergies hadn’t been invented yet.)

Like Dorothy Gale sans Toto, Sherri leaves Kansas and finds herself amidst a cast of characters as strange to her as the Scarecrow and the Munchkins were to Dorothy. Her whirlwind journey takes her from innocent, insecure stewardess to mature and confident flight attendant. Or does she?

Book your flight now with this very enjoyable read, put your seat back in the upright position, and enjoy the ride!

My Review

Easy to Read, Easy to Love Characters and Storyline. I love the author's storytelling style. I immediately fell into Sherri's story and the ups and downs she experienced in her new adventures and career. There was a realistic feel to Sherri's small-town girl coming-of-age story. I enjoyed watching Sherri's character grow and adapt to her new world and its characters and challenges.

Interesting Characters and Insights into the World of a Flight Attendant.   The author's insight into the career and lifestyle of a flight attendant shines through in this novel, adding to the relatable feel of the story. The training and career path were foreign to me before reading the book--so it gave me some things to learn and consider along the way.

Would I Recommend FlightLog? Sherri faces many challenges, unknowns, and moral dilemmas as she advances through her adventure to reach her goals. While I would have liked to have seen her character face some challenges differently, she met them interestingly and entertainingly, which fit her character's role. The book does end with an open feeling as though there is more to come. If you enjoy a relatable, entertaining chick-lit novel--this is a good one for your reading list.

Meet the Author

Susan Jo Humphrey, the daughter of a diplomat, was born in Izmir, Turkey where she lived for three years. She also lived in Korea and Thailand, before returning home to the US with her family as a teenager. She has traveled all over the United States, and has called several parts of this country ‘home.’ Her many airplane rides as a child convinced her she must one day become a stewardess. Suz was a flight attendant for thirteen of her twenty-five years with UAL. She began penning FlightLog with the help of the Naperville Writer’s Group, outside of Chicago. There, she published in their annual pamphlet, had a humor piece printed in an online magazine, and contributed many articles to local newspapers. At the time of publication, she is busy working on FlightLog II.

Away from the keyboard, Suz loves yoga, reading, cooking, listening to music and playing her guitar. She still enjoys mapping out travel to faraway places she’s never seen, as well as planning return trips to her favorite spots.

She currently lives in Southern California and has two grown children. Today, she’s in healthcare, where she’s worked since 2014. Suz was the ‘baby’ of her flight attendant classes – and the ‘senior’ student in her nursing classes. She’s eager to write that story as well: a novice baby-boomer RN begins her dream career as a travel nurse – just as a pandemic breaks out!

What's Not True Book Review & Book Tour Giveaway

Yesterday, I shared my thoughts on What's Not Said by Valerie Taylor.  Today, you can check out my thoughts on What's Not True, the second book in the series! Take a few minutes to learn about the author & the series--and enter for a chance to win a prize in the book tour giveaway at the end of this post.

Book Title:  What's Not True by Valerie Taylor
Category: Adult Fiction 18+
Genre: Women's Fiction, Chick Lit
Publisher:  She Writes Press, 321 pages
Release date:  August 2021
Content Rating:  PG-13 + M What's Not True has several sex scenes and some bad language.

What’s Not True…is an enthralling, character-driven story that will appeal irresistibly to fans of women’s fiction…Taylor’s prose is crystalline…she does not waste words, rather using them to create a tense, nerve-shredder that offers full entertainment to readers.”Readers’ Favorite 5-star review

About the Book

With her court date set for her divorce and her plans with the younger man in the rearview mirror, Kassie O’Callaghan shifts attention to reviving her stalled career. But things get complicated when she unexpectedly rendezvous with her former lover in Paris. After a chance meeting there with a colleague and a stroll along Pont Neuf, Kassie receives two compelling proposals. Can she accept them both?

But Kassie’s decision process screeches to a halt when her soon-to-be ex-husband has a heart attack, forcing her to fly home to Boston. There, she confronts his conniving and deceitful fiancée—a woman who wants not just a ring on her finger but everything that belongs to Kassie. In the ensuing battle to protect what’s legally and rightfully hers, Kassie discovers that sometimes it’s what’s not true that can set you free.

Though a standalone novel, What’s Not True is the sequel to What’s Not Said (September 15, 2020).

My Review

What's Not True Continues the Series.  I always say that I am not generally a romance novel fan.  My mom loved soap operas--and I can remember coming home after not watching for months (or years) and her "catching me up" on the stories.  The author's writing style gives readers the summarized "catch up" details needed from the first novel--but, I would still recommend reading it as you miss a lot if you don't follow the story from the characters' perspectives through the first book.

Don't Expect to Love the Characters.  I think I liked the characters even a bit less in this novel--but, in true soap opera fashion--you simply must read on to see what they are all up to next!  Coincidences and some far-reaching drama make the novel a little less than realistic--but, it is very well written, well organized and entertaining.  While I don't love the characters and their actions--I would read every future book of the series because the author's writing style, plot development and character dialogue is perfect to hold reader interest.

Would I Recommend What's Not True by Valerie Taylor? What's Not True continues a light,  entertaining chicklit romance series that readers won't be able to put down.   The love stories--and side stories--with revelations, connections and twists keep readers guessing and interested in the outcomes.  I love the author's writing style and the cast of flawed characters pulled together in the book.  It is an easy to read, easy to follow story that I hated to see end.  I look forward to more from the author.

Lynn Mapp is a daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, teacher, writer...obviously a multi-faceted diamond, princess cut. Lynn was a navy brat, born in San Diego, California. While she was born in California, her Idaho roots are deep. Her mother and grandfather were Idaho natives. She has always looked for happily ever afters, the light after the darkness. Families and humor are central in her life and her stories.

Janis McCurry - I was born and raised in Boise, Idaho, nestled in the beautiful Treasure Valley. I've never wanted to live anywhere else. We have four distinct seasons, mountains, lakes and deserts. My sisters and I were close growing up and we all still live in Boise. I could no more leave out a family connection than I could the romances I put in my novels. I write contemporary romance because I believe in happy endings, whether with a first-time love or a second chance love. An inveterate reader and moviegoer, I like romantic comedies, drama, and adventure themes.

Finding Anna
A Health and Happiness Society spinoff

About the Book

Anna Buchanan is a freshman college student with one plan: travel abroad.

Except . . . college life isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Her new roommate definitely has a quirky side. All those romantic comedies she watched growing up? Not happening. Money is harder to come by than she thought, and her first kiss is less-than-foot-popping.

Not to mention the fact that there aren’t enough hours in her day to sell blood plasma, work at the deli, and volunteer at her dream internship.

All of Anna’s hard-thought dreams tumble around her ankles when she buries herself too deep in dreams. Then the most terrifying news hits her like a slap in the face.

Can Anna salvage the time and money needed to fulfill her dreams? Or will she have to face the truth: that sometimes our greatest adventures never take us very far away.

Join Anna Buchanan in Finding Anna, a heartwarming novel about odd roommates, unattainable college boys, and the epic quest to find yourself.
