Dennis Conrad crafts an entertaining and enduring tale in Titus and the Christian Coin. He does not sidestep the difficult, real-life questions that Christians still ask today, but rather masterfully interweaves the context of an ancient setting with relatable and timeless struggles. A great read for anyone, especially in the young adult genre. — David Finnern, award-winning novelist/journalist and author of the Lost Tales and Sunken Mysteries series.
Titus and the Christian Coin, by Dennis Conrad is a wonderful story of faith and God’s sovereignty. The story is gripping and inspiring while telling the story of Christian history during the time of Constantine. It also shows the importance of hope, hard work, and forgiveness. This book should be on every middle young adult’s reading list. — Terrie Hellard-Brown, award-winning author and podcaster

about the book

When Titus refuses to deny his Christian faith, Roman persecution destroys his family and condemns him to a brutal life in the copper mines of northern Italy.

Underground, surrounded by despair and danger, he must choose between hatred and hope, revenge and redemption.

From a mine collapse to an emperor’s audience hall, Titus’s journey spans the Roman Empire during Constantine’s transformative reign. Alongside Tribune Felix, he discovers that true freedom comes through forgiveness, not force. Authentic historical details bring ancient Rome to life while timeless themes of faith, friendship, and courage inspire modern readers.

This gripping adventure combines accurate historical research with compelling storytelling. Readers will witness early Christian persecution, experience Roman culture, and walk through Constantine’s palace while following Titus’s transformation from broken slave to Roman citizen.

An unforgettable tale where archaeological accuracy meets heart-pounding adventure, proving that faith can triumph over the darkest circumstances and that God’s love never abandons His people.

my review

Engaging, Interesting and Action-Packed. The author has chosen an ancient historical time and setting for this middle-school/young-adult book. At first, I worried that the distance between modern tweens/teens and ancient Rome and Christian persecution would be a difficult bridge to leap for young readers. I didn't need to worry about that at all — the book is action-packed, engaging, and very easy to read and understand. The author does an excellent job of portraying the historical and religious climates in ways that are well-organized and age-appropriate — yet also thought-provoking and even inspirational for Christian readers.

Titus and the Christian Coin Brings Strong Characters and a Well-Developed Plot. The historical context is well-presented, and the traits of Conrad's characters (both good and bad) are presented in ways that further the plot and offer some character and life lessons to readers (without hitting them over the head with religion or "grown-up advice" Titus carries (and exhibits) his Christian faith from beginning to end--eve through the hardships and losses when it became complicated and even confusing. The author does an excellent job of allowing Titus to lead by example, sharing ancient history that is not commonly the subject of tween/teen fiction — and introducing young readers in our digital age to historical coins in an interesting way, too.

Would I Recommend Titus and the Christian Coin? The author offers a very age-appropriate storyline — but also one that adult readers can enjoy too. This story is definitely one I would read with a teen or share with them. The book does have a strong Christian focus, but it also has a historical, storytelling focus that allows it to be read by any history-interested teens. If you enjoy historical fiction with strong characters, this is a great young adult book for teens (and their parents).

About the Book

How far will a man go to save his very soul?

Derek Hollinger has walked a long, hard road since a fateful encounter with an Indigenous shaman woman turned his life upside down. Now married to Kendal, his angel and savior, Derek desperately wants to be the man she deserves. But his obsession with his tattoos—what they mean and how to get rid of them—is tearing down everything they’ve built together.

Paralyzed by depression and self-loathing, Derek is convinced that only one person can help him now: the granddaughter of the shaman whose power inked him from head to toe. Enlisting the aid of his loyal friend and spiritual advisor, Father Mike, Derek treks deep into the heart of the Amazon jungle, where a final reckoning between good and evil awaits.

But God’s plan for Derek isn’t what he expects. And coming back alive—whole in mind, heart, and spirit—will require every ounce of his fortitude and faith.

Read an Excerpt

But then, one morning, the tattoos appeared after he had a vivid nightmare of a swirling spiderweb that seemed to move and change as he tried to escape. He had awoken with a start, his heart racing and his body drenched in sweat. He remembered every detail—the grotesque spider with its sharp, black legs and beady eyes, looming over him as he struggled to free himself from its web. In his dream, he had been half-paralyzed with fear, unable to escape the creature’s grasp as it taunted and tortured him.

Now, as he lay in his bed, still trembling from the intensity of the recurring dream, he realized that the spider was not just a figment of his imagination. It was a manifestation of his deepest fears and insecurities, a symbol of the overwhelming challenges and struggles he faced in his waking life.

The tattoos covered his body from head to toe—even his face.

He had tried to subconsciously resist the spine-chilling transformation, to hide by going back into a deep, fitful sleep that night, hoping it was only a nightmare. But the tattoos seemed to have a mind of their own, and soon, his entire body was covered in a symphony of ink, intricate and detailed, each telling a story he could not understand.

Derek became a spectacle, a mystery, and a work of art. People would point and gawk at his tattoos. He nearly lost his medical practice.

He could not explain the disturbing dichotomy, but he felt an intense connection to these markings. He intuitively realized they were a part of him and he would never be alone again. After experiencing the vicious beating when he was a teenager that almost took his life, Derek struggled with feelings of unworthiness, believing that he somehow deserved what had happened to him. He had been selfish that day, not listening to his mother and not wanting to visit with his grandmother. Then she died suddenly; he never saw his grandmother again. It felt like there must have been something inherently wrong with him if the universe was willing to use its power against him in such cruel ways.

As a prominent plastic surgeon, he performed each reconstructive procedure with as much focus and precision as if working on his own body. His attention to detail and excellence in each procedure were an extension of the reconstructive surgeries performed by Dr. Christopher Casey on him as a child.

When he performed craniofacial surgery, it was, in his mind, a repetition of the one performed on his face so many years before. A reconstructive microsurgery on the delicate bones of a hand that might someday perform life-altering procedures.

In his dreams, he relived moments of profound regret and insecurity. He had told himself it was for the best when Kendal had left him for a short time before they married. He was protecting himself from the disappointment and hurt that inevitably came with a relationship’s dissolution. He had been able to rehabilitate himself in her eyes.

But now, in this vivid dream, he gripped the steering wheel of his parked Bentley and felt the familiar explosion go off in his head. He could not deny the truth any longer. He was a lonely and lost man. The realization was like a punch in the gut, and he could not help but feel a wave of sadness for what might have been.

about the book

Detective Jelani is a tough, veteran cop, who earned his stripes in the rough-and-tumble streets of St. Louis before relocating to Miami. His younger partner, Detective Madigan, is brash and confident. But they were never prepared for what awaits them as they try to solve these latest crimes. They are about to become embroiled in a series of cosmic events which they could have never dreamt of, even in their wildest imaginations. In a world where the angels of heaven and the angels of hell bring their ageless battle to Earth, how will these men, and their families, overcome such insurmountable challenges? As has been the case since the beginning of time, God and His heavenly host are facing off with Satan and his hellish host. Caught in the middle is Thumos, possibly the most powerful angel ever created. He is a warrior angel, "quickened" by God for one thing: battle. And he has seen plenty of that down through the centuries. No one can match his prowess; not even the Archangels. But Thumos has become a disgruntled warrior of God, and after standing by for long enough, he can take it no more. The earthly world of these two Miami detectives will collide with the heavenly world of Thumos. None of them know what is coming, and none of them will ever be the same again.

about the author

John has spent his professional career working in information technology by day and dabbling in a variety of other diversions by nights and weekends, including a few decades of serving in lay ministry. Now he is enjoying bringing to life his angelic hero, Thumos, and a host of other characters that he hopes you will find both entertaining as well as either inspiring or repulsive (after all, there are both good guys and bad guys in this story).  This is the first book of a series, featuring detectives Lane Madigan and Ian Jelani, whose experience with Thumos will yield life changing results.  And if you happen to be interested in such things, happy Bible Easter Egg hunting while you read, since many are planted throughout the book.

About the Book

Purest Mercy is a Christian fiction novel about the extraordinary ways that God can use the simplest, humblest people to achieve great miracles. In it, we meet Mercy, a homeless teenager on the run from horrific circumstances, who finds her place of belonging when she comes upon the Resurrection Christian Mission Church, and its dedicated pastor, Rev. Bethany Lewis. RCMC is a ministry specifically aimed at alleviating the difficulties and struggles experienced by homeless people, but they are strapped to the limit, and about to run out of food to serve the community...when Mercy's prayers result in a miraculous trove of food.

But the miracles are only just beginning. As Mercy's prayers begin to transform more and more lives with healing and hope, she falls in love with David Mullins, a homeless youth she seems to know from Another Time and Place. Mercy, David, and Bethany form a tight-knit family, drawn all the closer when a younger girl, Amy, joins them off the streets.

Then, one night, during an intense ice storm, Amy is attacked and left for dead at a nearby park...until Mercy finds her and, in a final act of selflessness, literally takes on Amy's wounds, receiving the stigmata just as she loses consciousness. Frantically, Bethany gets the young people back to the parsonage, where Mercy dies the following morning: Good Friday, 2013.

The family, and the Resurrection community, are heartsick over the shocking loss. Until God, again through Mercy, proves to them once and for all that even death cannot separate them from the Love--and Mercy--of the Divine.

  Read an Excerpt

Still looking down at the implausible situation presented to him by this overnight homicide, Ian wagged his head in utter disbelief. What kind of force did it take to actually nail someone’s head into a concrete sidewalk? With his bewilderment under control, his experience and training took over as he contemplated the crime scene. Aside from the obvious, he also noted a large rock lying on the ground near the dead man’s body. Puzzled, he thought to himself that the sticky wet red stains on it would not clear up this mystery any sooner.

Ian, long-having refused to give into all the electronic gadgetry of the day, scribbled on his old-fashioned notepad. He glanced up from it to see Lane walk up beside him. “Not another one,” Lane muttered quietly so only they could hear. Ian saw the younger detective looking for answers in his eyes. Ian was sure the only thing Lane saw there was the very same frustration and shock.

Ian maneuvered carefully around the victim’s body to get a closer view of the head. He turned on his penlight to get a better view in the still dimly lit morning hour. He let out a slow whistle. That is one big spike, driven right through this poor guy’s temple. Could the perp have used that softball sized rock nearby to drive the spike in? Get a grip, Jelani, he told himself. It was no wonder forensics had not yet been able to extract the spike. Not only would the extraction process further damage the victim’s head, conventional human strength had simply failed to budge it. He leaned in a little closer to inspect below the head as it lay in a large pool of congealing blood on the sidewalk. The spike went at least several inches down into the concrete, best as could be seen.
