About the Book

“I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU NOR FORSAKE YOU” - Hebrews 13:5

Opposites attract and Chad and Sierra are that.

Chad is destroyed on the outside by a suicide bomber while Sierra is broken on the inside by human trafficking. They are each other’s reflection of who they are - beautiful but ravaged by life.

Chad Michaels, an Afghan vet, comes home to a suicide bomber who destroys not only his family but the man he was. Now, he must deal with life as a burn victim -- as a monster. But Sierra sees what a beautiful man Chad truly is.

Not all wounds are flesh. Many are inside one’s soul where Sierra Smith’s scars run deep. Yet, Chad sees the innocence that Sierra fails to see. Kidnapped at the early age of six, Sierra was raised to become a high-end prostitute who now dreams of becoming a nurse...someone who helps heal people not service them. But her past relentlessly haunts her.

Sierra and Chad are determined to help each other heal from their traumas – whatever it takes. And, somehow, with God’s help, they will survive to see a brighter day.

about the book

Detective Jelani is a tough, veteran cop, who earned his stripes in the rough-and-tumble streets of St. Louis before relocating to Miami. His younger partner, Detective Madigan, is brash and confident. But they were never prepared for what awaits them as they try to solve these latest crimes. They are about to become embroiled in a series of cosmic events which they could have never dreamt of, even in their wildest imaginations. In a world where the angels of heaven and the angels of hell bring their ageless battle to Earth, how will these men, and their families, overcome such insurmountable challenges? As has been the case since the beginning of time, God and His heavenly host are facing off with Satan and his hellish host. Caught in the middle is Thumos, possibly the most powerful angel ever created. He is a warrior angel, "quickened" by God for one thing: battle. And he has seen plenty of that down through the centuries. No one can match his prowess; not even the Archangels. But Thumos has become a disgruntled warrior of God, and after standing by for long enough, he can take it no more. The earthly world of these two Miami detectives will collide with the heavenly world of Thumos. None of them know what is coming, and none of them will ever be the same again.

about the author

John has spent his professional career working in information technology by day and dabbling in a variety of other diversions by nights and weekends, including a few decades of serving in lay ministry. While serving in this capacity he preached hundreds of sermons, taught countless Bible study classes, and wrote dozens of inspirational articles.

He enjoys golf, guitars, grandchildren, and all things Kansas City – the Chiefs, the Royals, Sporting KC, KC Current, KC Symphony, and KC Broadway, to name a few.  He thinks (if not for his long-lost metabolism of youth) he could eat the famous Kansas City barbecue every day…maybe not for breakfast, but lunch and dinner for sure!

Now he is enjoying bringing to life his angelic hero, Thumos, and a host of other characters that he hopes you will find both entertaining as well as either inspiring or repulsive (after all, there are both good guys and bad guys in this story).  This is the first book of a series, featuring detectives Lane Madigan and Ian Jelani, whose experience with Thumos will yield life changing results.  And if you happen to be interested in such things, happy Bible Easter Egg hunting while you read, since many are planted throughout the book.

About the Book

Purest Mercy is a Christian fiction novel about the extraordinary ways that God can use the simplest, humblest people to achieve great miracles. In it, we meet Mercy, a homeless teenager on the run from horrific circumstances, who finds her place of belonging when she comes upon the Resurrection Christian Mission Church, and its dedicated pastor, Rev. Bethany Lewis. RCMC is a ministry specifically aimed at alleviating the difficulties and struggles experienced by homeless people, but they are strapped to the limit, and about to run out of food to serve the community...when Mercy's prayers result in a miraculous trove of food.

But the miracles are only just beginning. As Mercy's prayers begin to transform more and more lives with healing and hope, she falls in love with David Mullins, a homeless youth she seems to know from Another Time and Place. Mercy, David, and Bethany form a tight-knit family, drawn all the closer when a younger girl, Amy, joins them off the streets.

Then, one night, during an intense ice storm, Amy is attacked and left for dead at a nearby park...until Mercy finds her and, in a final act of selflessness, literally takes on Amy's wounds, receiving the stigmata just as she loses consciousness. Frantically, Bethany gets the young people back to the parsonage, where Mercy dies the following morning: Good Friday, 2013.

The family, and the Resurrection community, are heartsick over the shocking loss. Until God, again through Mercy, proves to them once and for all that even death cannot separate them from the Love--and Mercy--of the Divine.

Still looking down at the implausible situation presented to him by this overnight homicide, Ian wagged his head in utter disbelief. What kind of force did it take to actually nail someone’s head into a concrete sidewalk? With his bewilderment under control, his experience and training took over as he contemplated the crime scene. Aside from the obvious, he also noted a large rock lying on the ground near the dead man’s body. Puzzled, he thought to himself that the sticky wet red stains on it would not clear up this mystery any sooner.

Ian, long-having refused to give into all the electronic gadgetry of the day, scribbled on his old-fashioned notepad. He glanced up from it to see Lane walk up beside him. “Not another one,” Lane muttered quietly so only they could hear. Ian saw the younger detective looking for answers in his eyes. Ian was sure the only thing Lane saw there was the very same frustration and shock.

Ian maneuvered carefully around the victim’s body to get a closer view of the head. He turned on his penlight to get a better view in the still dimly lit morning hour. He let out a slow whistle. That is one big spike, driven right through this poor guy’s temple. Could the perp have used that softball sized rock nearby to drive the spike in? Get a grip, Jelani, he told himself. It was no wonder forensics had not yet been able to extract the spike. Not only would the extraction process further damage the victim’s head, conventional human strength had simply failed to budge it. He leaned in a little closer to inspect below the head as it lay in a large pool of congealing blood on the sidewalk. The spike went at least several inches down into the concrete, best as could be seen.

About the Book

In this poignant capstone to The Barabbas Trilogy, the man called Barabbas—infamous former thief, murderer and prisoner turned Christian—and his wife Chanah continue their mission of spreading the gospel across the known world as cauldrons of political and military chaos boil across the Roman Empire.

Nero is increasingly erratic, and it’s only a matter of time before the sharp knives of imperial politics finish him off. Various successors vie for position. Who will strike first, and who will come out on top?

Meanwhile, the rebellion in Judea has intensified, the Jewish zealots exerting great influence over the minds of the people. General Vespasian and his son Titus aim to put a permanent end to the insurrection. How many lives will ultimately be sacrificed on the great altar of Jerusalem? Can the Jewish nation survive the fulfillment of Jesus’s prophecy? What will become of the Jewish Christians and the apostles and sisters who lead them? And where will Barabbas and his family find lasting peace?

The Barabbas Legacy once again brings the early years of the church into vivid detail, concluding the journey of those first saints who sacrificed everything to bring Christ’s message to the world.

From The Barabbas Legacy, Chapter 3, the perspective of the apostle Paul

Paul stopped, raising his arms partway to calm Morech and Antonius, then waiting tranquilly for the men to skid to a halt a few yards in front of them.

“You’re here to rob us, I presume,” said Paul, taking the initiative.

The man in the middle, who seemed to be the leader, blinked, then snorted. “And maybe kill you, too. What’s to stop us?”

“God, who is Christ Jesus, who sends us along this path,” replied Paul serenely. He clasped his hands in front of him, standing comfortably. He had been robbed before, and beaten, and nearly killed. He knew what it felt like. But he experienced no fear of such in that moment.

“Ha ha!” yelled the man with exaggerated energy, looking at his companions. By all appearances, none of them had bathed in weeks. Fortunately, they were downwind. “He claims a god is going to protect him. This might be funner than we thought!” He laughed loudly, squeezing his eyes shut for emphasis as the other two joined in.

“For whom?” responded Paul, raising his voice slightly to be heard over the three guffawing ruffians. He could feel his own companions tensing beside him, especially Antonius, who constantly exhibited a boundless loyalty and love for Paul—and for Barabbas, given their first encounter on Melita, which had eventually led to his freedom. “Why did you leave your hiding place? You are only three, and we are three. You don’t even know if we are armed. And I might be smaller and older, but that doesn’t mean I’m not dangerous.” He said it matter-of-factly, as if he had just described the weather on a mild day.

“We’re experienced fighters,” said the leader boastfully, straightening to his full height and sticking out his chest, which was covered in a simple, hide-based armor.

“And I am a friend of Nero,” replied Paul, “though, admittedly, I am not in his best graces at the moment.”

“Ha! Then we’ll take your head and show it to him!” announced the leader.

Paul raised an eyebrow. “Even if you could take it, it wouldn’t survive the journey to Rome before becoming unrecognizable. Then he would have you hanged. Or crucified.”

That gave the man serious pause. “Then we’ll kidnap you, and take you to Rome alive,” he concluded. “I’m sure Nero will pay us a handsome fee.”

Paul chuckled, grateful he still felt so calm. “Have you met Nero?” He knew the humor in his eyes made the man uncomfortable. He would be recalling that Nero had a well-earned reputation for capriciousness and ruthlessness. Those stories were almost always exaggerated, lending them epic impact across the provinces.

“We’ll just kill you, then,” the leader sneered, “so you can’t never tell your ‘friend’ Nero you ever saw us. How about that?”

Paul’s calm grew deeper, and then his spiritual eyes were suddenly opened. “You have no idea what’s behind you, do you?”

“Aaaahhh haaahhh, you ain’t fooling us with that old trick. We’re smarter than your average, hard-working bandit folk.”

“Morech, Antonius, do you see them?”

He didn’t glance at his companions, but he sensed both shaking their heads. “No,” they said in unison.

Paul gazed briefly heavenward. “Father, open their eyes, that they may see.” He closed his own as a gentle breeze rustled his robes, then grew slightly in intensity. When he opened his eyes, Morech and Antonius had both fallen to their knees, staring at the area directly behind the bandits. Paul looked at each of his friends in turn.

“As Elisha said, ‘Fear not, for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.’”

“Well, I’ve had enough of this nonsense,” said the leader, raising his rusty dagger before him. He got into an attacking stance and was about to rush them when he pitched forward, landing awkwardly on his face. He leaped to his feet, whirling to face his companions.

“Which of you did that?” he asked angrily, following up his question with a creative curse and a shower of flying spittle.

Both men looked stunned, eyes wide, faces painted thick with outlaw innocence. “We didn’t do anything,” said one of them. “You just fell.”

The leader growled. He was so angry he didn’t seem to care that his back was to Paul and the others. “I didn’t ‘just fall,’ you moron. Somebody pushed me!” He stepped menacingly toward them. “Now which of you louts was it, and why?”

Shrugging, they both backed up a step in perfect unison. The leader wheeled toward Paul and pointed his quivering dagger. “Stay there while I get this sorted.”

It was such a ridiculous request Paul almost laughed. He grinned, grabbing each of his companions by the arm to urge them to their feet.
