About the Book

The perfect neighborhood. The perfect family. The perfect crime.

When Dawn Harrington moves to the quiet, picturesque town of Meadowbrook, she’s hoping for a fresh start. A place where no one knows her name. Where she can leave behind the whispers, the heartbreak, the gaping hole left by the son who vanished from a park nearly twenty years ago. But secrets have a way of following you.

A few blocks over, Evelyn Harper has spent years crafting the perfect life—an adoring husband, beautiful children, a home straight out of a magazine. But when she sees Dawn standing in her driveway, Evelyn feels the first stirrings of something she hasn’t felt in years.

Fear.

Because Dawn isn’t just any new neighbor. She’s a woman with a past. A past that collides violently with Evelyn’s own.

At first, Dawn and Evelyn circle each other warily—neighborly smiles masking something far more sinister. But as Dawn starts asking questions and Evelyn begins watching her every move, the game between them becomes something far more treacherous.

As their carefully built lives begin to crumble, one of them will stop at nothing to uncover the truth.

The other will stop at nothing to keep it buried.

Because some lies can be forgiven. Others demand blood.

The Perfect Mother is a spellbinding psychological thriller about deception, obsession, and how far a mother will go for the truth. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Gillian Flynn, and Shari Lapena, this is one twisted suburban nightmare you won’t soon forget.

My Review

The Perfect Mother Brings Some Twists and Turns to the Expected Storyline. While Evelyn's secret is easy enough to figure out pretty early on, the author still manages to weave some twists and turns throughout the story to keep it interesting and engaging. It did take a few chapters for me to fall into sync with the flow of the story and the shifts between time periods and points of view, but I enjoyed watching the full story unfold.

Don't Expect to Love the Characters. I didn't find myself connecting well with any of the characters in the book, but they were fairly well-developed and complex enough to keep me interested in the outcomes. While the shifts in the points of view throughout the novel helped tell the stories of both women, there were times that the voices were very similar, and this made some sections seem a little confusing or feel overly long.

Would I Recommend The Perfect Mother by Desiree Moodie? If you are looking for an exciting page-turner--this isn't that type of psychological thriller. If you enjoy dramas that look at the impacts of events and trauma on lives, this is an interesting story. I didn't love the ending as presented in the novel and preferred the "alternate ending" provided, so be sure to read both endings! Overall, I enjoyed the book (especially with the alternate ending) and would read other books from the author.

Meet the Author

Desiree Moodie has been writing since before she could talk — seriously. As a kid, she spent weekends scribbling on notebook paper and stapling the pages together into makeshift books.

Now, she crafts dark, twisty stories featuring morally complex characters and impossible-to-put-down plots. Her writing is influenced by her travels, old-school noir films, and pro-wrestling (yes, still). She loves difficult women, villains who might just have a point, and snappy dialogue.

When she's not writing, Desiree is watching reruns of Perry Mason, working on her Lauren Bacall impression, or pulling Tarot cards. She’s got a soft spot for readers who love clever, gritty stories with a little bite — so don’t be shy. Drop her a line (just not in all caps).

About the Book

“Love before Covid - A raw, philosophical dive into love’s messy reality—unflinching, dark, and unapologetically human. Unlike typical romance novels, LOVE BEFORE COVID is a dialogue-driven exploration of human flaws and ideologies, blending fiction with metaphysical inquiry. It’s not about comfort; it’s about confrontation and insight.”

Laced with dark humour, it is best described as traumatic (sur)realism. Love Before Covid takes the reader on a journey through the mind of Joe Pastorius - jazz fan, poet, and victim of horrendous sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of his mother.

The real-time dialogues between the characters that emerge from Joe’s unconscious come via arguably corrupted memories and dystopian dreams. They tell us more about Joe than he could ever know, and perhaps more about our world than you could ever imagine.

Dialogues entail an exploration of clashing perspectives and opinions, that cause reflection. Today though, our world has been infiltrated by online dialogues that tend to feel like wild unfiltered streams of human thought, raw, chaotic and often polarising and devoid of much reflection. Arguably that attitude, and lack of reflection is mirrored by the characters you will encounter. The reflection comes from the reader as the situations unfold. Your moral boundaries will without doubt be pushed to the limit.

You will meet an altruist who can’t stand up for himself, a charming but violent public intellectual, a beautiful dancer who hates fat people, a flirty and gregarious bartender who will do anything to get pregnant, a traumatised art historian who never wants to be a mother, a successful intellectual Mexican writer who is secretly disapproving of her childhood friend’s career as a pornstar, the teenage genius son of that pornstar who has sexual fantasises about his mother, a woman who is pressured into cutting off her penis and a successful therapist who has a habit of ruining people’s lives.

And yes, before you ask, some of the characters in this book eventually catch Covid 19. However, there is always hope. For Joe Pastorious, that comes in the form of the psychopath named Janet Waverley.

About the Author

During the pandemic Dr Greg Scorzo completed his first novel ‘LOVE BEFORE COVID’ as well as producing an innovative radio play based on 6 chapters from that book, also called – LOVE BEFORE COVID. available on our YouTube Channel.  and via Audioboom with links to all major podcast platforms.

Greg says, “I was interested in the challenge of writing a novel that was formally experimental, while still being easy for a mass audience to read and understand. I love the idea of a piece of philosophy that is simultaneously a work of fiction, and a philosophical thought experiment which can function like a great, twisty roller coaster of a story that asks the reader many questions. Unlike traditional philosophy and many fashionable works of literature, this book purposefully asks questions without giving answers, encouraging readers to think (and emote) for themselves.”

Since gaining his PhD in Philosophy in 2011, Greg Scorzo has aimed to find creative and original ways to take philosophical thinking outside of academia. By using modern accessible philosophical dialogue inpublic talks, podcasts and his novel Love Before Covid, Greg explores clashing perspectives and opinions that cause reflection. Based in Leicester, he was a founding member of Culture on the Offensive and runs the podcast The ‘Art of Thinking’.

Dialogues entail an exploration of clashing perspectives and opinions that cause reflection. Statements and declarations can close minds.

About the Book

She inherited a legacy of ambition, betrayal, longing and secrets.

In the shadow of Poisson Gold, a multi-billion-dollar gold mine conglomerate, a family's legacy unravels in a compelling tale that dives deep into the human psyche.

At the helm of this empire stands the enigmatic Abe Silver, a concentration camp survivor whose past holds secrets as complex as his fortune. With his health failing, Abe's last-minute will alters the course of history, leaving his daughter Ellie, a newly minted lawyer, to navigate a treacherous path to control the colossal riches.

As grieving Ellie grapples with the immense responsibility thrust upon her, she must confront not only the malignant opposition of her own family and the rigid glass ceiling, but also her deeply buried secret - her sexuality. Set against the backdrop of 2010, a time when LGBTQ+ acceptance was scarce, Ellie's struggle to reconcile her personal truth with her public facade adds an extra layer of complexity to this riveting narrative.

My Review

The Unexpected Heiress is an Engaging Family Saga--Once The Story Takes Shape. I had a little trouble settling into the story at first. I didn't love Abe's character--and while the historical challenges and his rise to overcome the past were interesting--I wasn't immediately pulled into his story. Once the character list grew and the pieces of the drama began to emerge, the story was easy to read and engaging.

Expect a Long List of Characters. While the cast list of this book is long, there are relatable characters, dysfunction and secrets, and struggles and challenges that allow the author to bridge Abe's historical presence with Ellie's more modern world and personal life/family dynamics.

Would I Recommend The Unexpected Heiress by George Mallory? If you enjoy family sagas that blend secrets and traumas of the past with secrets and dramas of the present through different perspectives, this book is an interesting read. While I didn't really love the main characters--I enjoyed reading their stories and watching the dramas play out. Be patient as you settle into the story--there will be plenty of twists and elements of human nature to keep you engaged through the end.

George Mallory's literary journey is a testament to the transformative power of storytelling. Born in Serbia to Russian parents and raised in Australia, his multicultural background offers a unique perspective that enriches the tapestry of his narratives. From his early years at Lithgow High to pursuing an engineering degree at UNSW in Sydney, George's academic journey laid the foundation for his literary pursuits. His love for literature, kindled in childhood, eventually led him to pursue a Bachelor of Arts at Sydney University.

In The Unexpected Heiress, he brings to life a character inspired by the untold stories of concentration camp survivors who amassed wealth. Through dual-perspective narratives, George weaves themes of corporate glass ceiling, sexual orientation and dysfunctional families, offering readers a compelling and thought-provoking reading experience. George's extensive corporate background sensitised him to social prejudices and discrimination. His novels reflect his commitment to shedding light on these issues while delivering engaging stories. He features determined women who defy societal norms, demonstrating resilience and determination while retaining their femininity.

About the Author

Travis Bush is a novelist, academic writer, and committed adventurer, at least in his mind. Born in the small town of Dade City, Florida, and then raised in the slightly bigger town of Zephyrhills, he quickly looked to leaving whenever he could. Hindered in his first attempt—being only eleven then and lacking a driver's license—Travis was forced to stick around for longer than he wanted. Once grown and graduated from Saint Leo University, which equipped him with degrees in Political Science and History, he was ready to take on the world. While his education may have given him a deep love of philosophy and humanity, it didn't yield many career opportunities nor the chance to leave town like he'd always dreamed. Luckily, Uncle Sam had just the thing for him: Travis joined the Army and finally went on his grand adventure. However, it was slightly less grand and looked much more like rural Alabama, Louisiana, Virginia, and Arizona. The adventure was also less on the adventurous side and more confined to isolating cubicles and windowless rooms. Undeterred, Travis took to daydreaming and writing. His debut novel and those that follow, overflow with the adventures, nightmares, or caffeine-fueled hallucinations he wished he'd had or wishes he hadn't.
