About the Book

Get unfiltered broadcasting and career advice with this biting and provocative firsthand account of working in media.

Paul Burton has 45 years under his belt, including 10 as a regional editor for New York City-based trade publication, Bond Buyer, and he’s survived—and thrived—to tell the tale. From his humble beginnings to his rise in the industry, Burton covers a lot of ground in his stories, from dealing with people in media and finance to workers in tech and personnel. He not only gives honest insights about financial news but also reveals the controversial internal politics of journalism and publishing that run rampant.

Burton’s wisdom on topics such as covering hot-button issues and fighting against negative stereotypes proves that a career in media is just like the news itself: eclectic, bold, and unexpected.

Take part in the drama and missteps that are a part of success in one of the best journalistic memoirs about business on the market.

About the Author

I am a retired journalist and author of two books, the most recent, “Fiascoes and Foibles: An Unfiltered Look at Public Finance, Media, Politics and Sports” (Elite Authors). It came out last Nov. 28. My earlier book was “Tales from the Newsrooms: An Offbeat Look” (Create Space), in 2011.

“Fiascoes,” a collection of anecdotal essays, reflects largely on my coverage of U.S. public finance over the last 10 years of my career – as a regional editor for a business publication in the shadow of Wall Street – against the backdrop of my 45 years in media. They capture drama, missteps and intrigue I encountered with color and biting, irreverent humor. Plenty of attitude. Topics range from transit/infrastructure to media and politics, and also include broadcasting and podcast dynamics, the alarming clout of tech bureaucracies, the abject failure of open-plan office layouts in the workplace and how my early days in sports journalism shaped and benefited my career.

Unique to my perspective is my blue-collar background. The media employs precious few people from working backgrounds these days. I didn’t go to Harvard, Duke or Stanford and prance right into the New York Times or Wall Street Journal. I was the son of a bartender who navigated a winding road, often working for small-to-medium media outlets who punched above their weight class, and frequently landed a rewarding knockout punch.

Nonfiction Business Management Book Spotlight: Man... F@#K! by Rod F. Marchand

This morning, I have another nonfiction business management book for entrepreneurs!  Check out Man... F@#K! by Rod F. Marchand, learn about the author and read an excerpt!

About the Book

Man...F@#K! shares the honest and often unspoken reality of entrepreneurship while serving up a large dose of much-needed hope and inspiration to all business owners and entrepreneurs trying to take their companies to the next level. Unlike most other books on business, this book clearly defines the difficulties of life and the challenges of managing and building a brand from virtually nothing into a potential global company. It also accurately illustrates the struggles of working with a family business and the expectations of starting in a small market and what it takes to overcome those challenges and achieve personal and professional goals on a larger scale.

It's a fun, yet realistic story of what it takes to keep your head up in times of trial - when all you can think is Man...F@#K! out of frustration - in order to ultimately make your dreams a reality.

Read an Excerpt

Excerpt Pages and Chapter: pages 150-151 Chapter: Going from “Really Good” to
“Great”

I love to read, though you might think I never have time! I think it’s important to get as many different perspectives on business as possible, especially from those who have had failures as well as success. If I have found the most consistent theme among men and women who have experienced success, it is that
they have always had multiple failures along the way. This changes the mindset of “win or lose” to “win or learn.” A recent book I read entitled Good to Great sparked one of the newest cultural shifts in my company. I felt that this was exactly where we were, or actually, I would have ranked us as “really good,” but somehow, we still couldn’t cross the final hurdle to “great.” The challenge is tough for any team. If I were to rank us in terms of performance percentage, I would say we run at around ninety-six percent. If you were a student, you wouldn’t sneeze at that metric! But I believe we could achieve the goal of operating at one hundred percent of our capacity. Now remember, I’m not talking about being perfect, but being excellent.

There is a tremendous difference. I have been driving a culture of personal/professional excellence by being remarkable every day. This doesn’t mean life won’t happen, remember the title of this book is Man...F@#k! It means that if you approach everything you do with the mindset of giving the best of your ability, you will be excellent and remarkable. Success breeds success and has a ripple effect
throughout the whole company.

About the Book

Opening during the Nazi occupation of Greece, best-selling No Limits is a true-life adventure story of Nick Haritatos. From his humble beginnings in war-torn Greece to southern Africa, Haritatos began a remarkable journey to success, buying his first business at sixteen and creating a portfolio of successful companies in Rhodesia, South Africa, and the United States.

Buffeted by winds of sweeping political and cultural changes, Haritatos pledged to make his own destiny, regardless of any obstacles. Haritatos lived a life of adventure set amidst dirt roads in tribal lands in Africa, harrowing days of the Rhodesian Bush War, numerous board rooms, and one-of-a-kind ocean-view homes.

With a foreword by Jack Canfield, No Limits gives readers a glimpse into the experiences and mindset of a man who faced numerous obstacles with unwavering confidence and a unique ability to build relationships with people from every walk of life. These relationships, coupled with the determination, passion and focus that he cultivated, gave Haritatos opportunities to build multi-million-dollar businesses, become a successful pilot, walk the 1,200-mile California Coastal Trail from the US-Mexico border north to the Oregon border, create a beautiful family and circle of friends, and achieve almost every other goal he set for himself.

No Limits will both entertain and inspire you. It is full of heart-warming relationships, drama, intrigue, and achievement, set against a background of tumultuous change. Woven into the text and highlighted in the appendix, No Limits includes Haritatos' pillars of business and personal success.

If you want to become the architect of your own destiny, regardless of your circumstances, this book is for you.

About the Author

Nick Haritatos is a successful entrepreneur, soccer player, pilot, and devoted family man whose life experience has spanned four countries on three continents. From his humble beginnings in war-torn Greece to southern Africa, Haritatos began a remarkable journey to success, buying his first business at sixteen and creating a portfolio of successful companies in Rhodesia, South Africa, and the United States.

Buffeted by winds of sweeping changes, Nick pledged to make his own destiny, regardless of any obstacles. He lived a life of adventure set amidst mud huts and dirt roads in tribal lands in Africa, harrowing days of the Rhodesian Bush War, numerous board rooms, international trips to over forty countries, and one-of-a-kind ocean view homes.

His business career stretches across twenty-three companies and over fifty years in manufacturing, retail, service, and commercial, retail and residential real estate. With a knack for spotting untapped potential in businesses and people, Nick treasures his vast network of friends as intensely as his financial success. He loves to celebrate life with music and dancing whenever possible.

Early on, Nick developed a unique and flexible lifestyle model that allowed him to oversee multiple businesses simultaneously while devoting plenty of time to his wife and children. With his decision to create his own destiny, Nick maintains control over his life and his future even under challenging circumstances, when most others followed tradition.  His motto is “I make events. Events don’t make me.”

An avid athlete, Nick has played and coached soccer for most of his life. Nick has team members who’ve played soccer with him for nearly twenty five years in San Diego. As of the writing of this book, he’s played in more than 2,500 matches, as well as completed several marathons. He plans to be playing soccer when he is eighty years old and beyond.

Outside of his family, one of his proudest achievements was hiking the 1,200-mile California Coastal Trail.

Today Nick uses his considerable business and life experience to mentor and inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders, when he isn’t on the soccer field or planning his next walk.

Nick is available to speak to groups interested in business and personal success. For more information on his speaking and mentoring work, visit his website at www.nolimitsbynick.com

About the Book

She’s changing women’s lives, one play at a time.

Women are natural leaders but they’ve been taught to play the game by an outdated set of rules. So certified executive coach, Randi Braun, wrote them a new playbook.

In Braun’s book, Something Major: The New Playbook for Women at Work, women will discover how to play the leadership game on their own terms and win when it comes to achieving their goals: whether it’s cracking the code on your self-doubt by ditching perfectionism, external validation, and the tyranny of your inner critic, or learning new tactics for owning your message (don’t miss 16 things she forbids you to say at work). Braun’s book provides a fresh take on one of the most tremendous challenges of our time: empowering women at work to chart their own course to the top — dialing up confidence and fulfillment, and dialing down burnout in the process.

In Something Major: The New Playbook for Women at Work, Braun takes the field and re-writes the plays of the game. She is a sought-after thought leader, speaker, and CEO of the women’s leadership firm, Something Major. Her book delivers stories for today’s women leaders in a conversational style that’s packed with sage advice and wildly entertaining.
