5 Books to Read for Benjamin Franklin Day

Benjamin Franklin Day is celebrated annually on January 17th, Franklin's birthday. Franklin was undoubtedly a man of many talents and interests--ranging from politician and musician to scientist, author, and inventor. There are tons of books for kids to learn about the man--but, today, I wanted to share five grown-up books that will help adults learn a little about this man beyond the biographies you may have read in elementary school.

Benjamin Franklin:  An American Life

 by Walter Isaacson

In this biography, Walter Isaacson, bestselling author of Einstein and Steve Jobs, shows how the most fascinating of America's founders helped define our national character.

Isaacson provides the full sweep of Franklin’s amazing life, showing how he helped to forge the American national identity and why he has a particular resonance in the twenty-first century.

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin:

The Original 1793 Edition

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written.

Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them. There are actual breaks in the narrative between the first three parts, but Part Three's narrative continues into Part Four without an authorial break. In the "Introduction" of the 1916 publication of the Autobiography, editor F. W. Pine wrote that Franklin's biography provided the "most remarkable of all the remarkable histories of our self-made men" with Franklin as the greatest exemplar.

Benjamin Franklin's Book of Virtues by Benjamin Franklin

Published in 1791 after his death, this smaller pull-out of Franklin's autobiography, shares Franklin's 13 virtues that he sought to work on in himself in efforts of self improvement. Reading Franklin's discussions of these virtues and their roles in "perfection" allows readers insights into Franklin's views, efforts, successes and motivations toward life success.

Poor Richard's Almanack by Benjamin Franklin

This reprinted version of Ben Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanack captures the book as it was in the late 1700's--filled with wit, wisdom, proverbs, jokes and hoaxes along with some annual calendars, weather and more typical almanac materials. Published originally under the pseudonym Richard Saunders, from 1732 to 1758, the original prints ran over 10,000 copies per year. This reprinted version compiles hundreds of pieces from many issues of the original publications.

The Way to Wealth by Benjamin Franklin

The first American book on personal finance, "The Way to Wealth" by Benjamin Franklin is still the best and wisest money book ever written. Originally published in 1758 as the preface to "Poor Richard's Almanack," this little gem has been through innumerable printings and sold millions of copies to those in search of smart but entertaining advice about hard work, earning and saving money and debt.

Read an Excerpt

  One

Tiny dots of stars and planets form constellations above my head. Orion. The bear. The
great hunter. I’m only eleven, but I know a lot about the stars. It’s where my mom lives
now. I come out on cool, clear evenings through the broken window in the attic to lie on the
roof and listen for the sound of her voice.

“Dexter?” A voice whispers to the left of my head.

I look over. My little brother Dougal leans out of the window, looking first at me, then up
into the sparkling sky. “Aren’t you cold?”

I shrug, feeling the scratchy shingles beneath my jacket. “I like it out here.”

Dougal swings a leg through the window. Where I’m lying is the flattest part of the roof. On
either side it swoops up so steep that even I won’t climb it. Dougal stops in the windowsill,
letting his legs dangle. His big personality makes it easy for me to forget that he’s only eight
years old. Eight and a half, he’ll point out. Still, even for someone almost nine, he looks tiny
in the window with the glow of light from the attic.

When Mom was here, she spent hours in the attic, building a small replica of the town
where we live. She didn’t grow up here. She said she picked this small town in Pennsylvania
because, to her, it was the most magical place on Earth. Mom had answers for everything.

Maybe that’s why I spend so much time on the roof, hoping to see a sign that she’s listening.

The Cricket Colony had been Mom’s idea. Since me and my best friend, Fiona, spend so
much time in the forest near our house, she’d suggested I make adventure a part of my
grade. Tomorrow I turn in the crickets for my end-of-the-semester science project. Then I
have to turn them loose back in the forest, where they’ll make homes under thick beds of
leaves to stay warm. But I’ll miss them a lot.

Dougal shivers. “Dad was weird tonight.”

I nod. “Dad’s been weird every night for a few months now.”

Stars sparkle in the dark sky. We all want her back, even if we don’t talk about it. Instead,
we talk about far-off galaxies.
My little brother points to the sky. “There’s Andromeda.”
It was Mom’s favorite, because you can see it just by lying on a roof at the end of autumn.
Mom said things like, “I believe that’s a globular cluster,” and “Stars are old.” She said that
when stars die, they sometimes leave a black hole behind to remind everyone they were
alive once. There is definitely a hole in our family. Not a bad hole, but a big hole. The kind of

hole that sneaks up on me late at night when I remember. So, sometimes, I climb out here
to forget.

My walkie-talkie crackles to life on the flat space next to me. “Gamma Ray to Cosmic. Come in, Cosmic.”

Dougal leans forward, trying to get a look at the Little Dipper.

I press the button. “Cosmic here.”

“Whew. I thought you’d slipped into another dimension.”

“Hardly. I’m up on the roof.”

Fi is quiet a second; then she says, “Any signs yet?”

“Nope. But sometimes these things take a while.”

“Speaking of taking a while, I gotta wake up super early to finish my project, so I gotta get
some sleep.”

“Got a title yet?”

She laughs. “Nope.” A second passes. “Tell Dougal I said goodnight, and I’ll be out back in
the morning.”

Dougal softly yells, “Goodnight,” over my shoulder and pushes off to go inside.

Someday I want to be able to sleep under the stars without having to worry about rolling
off the roof. Mom said space is full of magic, but there isn’t much magic since she left. I
guess that’s just how it is sometimes. I stand up, stretching.

I’m ready for adventure. Except it’s late, and Dad hates it when I wake him up, going up and
down the stairs.

I climb back through the window and look at the attic. An old sofa with a stack of books on
building miniatures; a work table with the village on top; Mom’s favorite blanket; a cart full
of brushes, glue, and a few big jars like the one I used to make my Cricket Colony.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see a flash and turn.

There, blazing its way across the dark, is the most incredible falling star I’ve ever seen. It’s
so close, I swear I can hear the sizzle. I know it’s a sign. I squeeze my eyes shut and make a
wish.

Book Review Feature: 'Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate by Dorothy Rosby

It is a little tough for most of us to find the title of Dorothy Rosby's holiday essay collection at least a little relatable!  A couple of years ago, I read and reviewed her Alexa is a Spy and Other Things to Be Ticked Off About so I knew that I had to give holiday themed 'Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate a spot on my reading list!    Check out 'Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate, learn about author Dorothy Rosby, read my thoughts on the book and be sure to enter for a chance to win a prize in the book tour giveaway at the end of this post.

Book Title:  ‘Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate; Holidays, Special Occasions and Other Times Our Celebrations Get Out of Hand  by Dorothy Rosby
Category:  Adult Non-Fiction (18+) ,  258 pages
Genre: Humorous Essay
Publisher:  Unhinged Press

About the Book

Christmas comes but once a year; chaos never ends! Happy Halloween, merry Christmas and joyful Lumpy Rug Day. We didn’t make that up. Lumpy Rug Day is celebrated every May 3, though “celebrated” might be too strong a word. It’s the American way to create a celebration for everything, then turn it into a chore or worse, a nightmare. ’Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate is a collection of humorous essays about holidays, special occasions and other times our celebrations make us feel not-so-celebratory. It’s understanding for those who think Christmas form letters can be honest—or they can be interesting. And it’s empathy for anyone who’s ever gotten poison ivy during Nude Recreation Week or eaten all their Halloween candy and had to hand out instant oatmeal packets to their trick-or-treaters.

My Review

Rosby Brings a Little Humor to the Chaos of Holidays. While the overdone, over-the-top activities surrounding Christmas in the U.S. is the humorous focus of many of Rosby's essays in this book--other holidays and celebration-required events take a few shots from the author too. With a conversational, relatable, sarcastic tone--the author puts thoughts to paper that many of us feel but never speak aloud. If you have ever experienced a little holiday guilt (or social media envy)--or feel lost and inadequate in the sea of commercialized chaos--this book may bring some smiles and even a slight relief in knowing that you aren't alone in your feelings!

'Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate May Bring More Than a Laugh. As I read through the humorous essays, I smiled, eye-rolled, sympathized, and realized the truth behind so many of the stories and essays: we dread the holidays instead of enjoying them. I related to almost all of her pieces in at least a little way. This realization made me a little sad that I don't enjoy the reasons for the holidays because I have turned them into nightmarish monstrosities of "we have to do these ten zillion things" instead of the 2 or 3 things that matter. While Rosby shares some extremes with her humor and sarcasm in her essays, she is sadly not far from reality with many of her thoughts!

Would I Recommend 'Tis the Season to Feel Inadequate: Holidays, Special Occasions and Other Times our Celebrations Get Out of Hand by Dorothy Rosby? If you could use a few laughs and a relatable book of holiday-themed essays to make you smile, take a break from the chaos of holiday preparation and merriment, and, maybe, even realize just how silly some of your holiday chaos has become--this book should be on your reading list. Some of the essays a little redundant in their sarcastic messages--but, they still bring a relatable smile.  I love the author's writing style and her sarcastic humor, and this book is the perfect way to poke fun at the holiday chaos that brings so many of us down every year!

I would say that the author has inspired me to drop some of the chaos from our family holiday season--but, in reality, I will be making Peppermint Bark Poke Cake later today in honor of National Peppermint Bark Day.

 About the Author
For twenty-six years C.S. McDonald’s life whirled around a song and a dance. Classically trained at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School, The Pittsburgh Dance Alloy, and many others, she became a professional dancer and choreographer. During that time, she choreographed many musicals and an opera for the Pittsburgh Savoyards. In 2011 she retired from her dance career to write. Under her real name, Cindy McDonald, she writes murder-suspense and romantic suspense novels. In 2014 she added the pen name, C.S. McDonald, to write children’s books for her grandchildren. In 2016 she added the Fiona Quinn Mysteries to that expansion. She decided to write the cozy mystery series that everyone, including teens and tweens, can read and enjoy. Presently, the Fiona Quinn Mysteries includes nine books with a tenth slated for 2021. The books are also available on audio, narrated by Maren Swenson Waxenberg.

Cindy’s newest venture is The Owl’s Nest Mysteries. Once again, she has set her cozy mystery in Pittsburgh and the female protagonist, Alexa Owl, is much different from Fiona Quinn. The Owl’s Nest Mysteries has a little grit, a little time travel, a little romance, and a whole lot of cozy!

Ms. McDonald resides on her Thoroughbred farm known as Fly by Night Stables near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Bill, and her poorly behaved Cocker Spaniel, Allister.

About the Book

Ever since eleven-year-old Dexter Duckworth and his brother, Dougal, lost their mom, everything has been different. But “different” takes on a whole new meaning when, one day just before Christmas (or Kissmas, as they call it), Dexter finds a golden rock in the forest that hatches into an adorable alien. Gobbledy is smarter than he seems and is lost on planet Earth. Before long, Gobbledy takes Dexter, Dougal, and their best friend Fi on an adventure of friendship, family, and loss―one that requires them all to stay out of trouble, protect Gobbledy from a shadowy group called the Planetary Society, and prepare for their school’s Winter Extravaganza Play, where Dexter has to be a dreaded Gingerbread Man.

Gobbledy is a fun-filled holiday story that adds up to two brothers, three friends, unlimited jars of peanut butter, a ketchup factory, and one little alien far, far from home.
