About the Book

In this periodic table book, 20 Alchemical Wizards present Magical Elements of the Periodic Table. Each wizard wields a magical staff tipped with an element which gives them unique powers. Areg starts out Book 1 of the Alchemical Wizards by introducing the important element Argon on his element page. Thurwin rounds out the Book 1 elements by presenting facts and other fun information about the metal, Thulium on his element page. Another elemental favorite is Galoa, who represents Gadolinium. It gives her the power to control and manipulate electromagnetic waves, rendering her a formidable force in the world of technology and communication. Phova is truly magical, as Phosphorus gives her the ability to manipulate light and create illusions. She can control the intensity, color, and direction of light, allowing her to bend it to her will.

The Alchemical Wizards, along with their techno-magical unicorn and dragon friends from the first 2 Magical Elements Books are the perfect group to introduce you to metals and other elements in the Periodic Table. Hopefully, the Magical Elements of this periodic table book will spark an interest in the magical and real world properties of all the metals and other elements known today. You may be surprised at how prominently they feature in our every day lives. Each element page in this book contains terms that might not be completely familiar to the reader

5 Books to Read for Benjamin Franklin Day

Benjamin Franklin Day is celebrated annually on January 17th, Franklin's birthday. Franklin was undoubtedly a man of many talents and interests--ranging from politician and musician to scientist, author, and inventor. There are tons of books for kids to learn about the man--but, today, I wanted to share five grown-up books that will help adults learn a little about this man beyond the biographies you may have read in elementary school.

Benjamin Franklin:  An American Life

 by Walter Isaacson

In this biography, Walter Isaacson, bestselling author of Einstein and Steve Jobs, shows how the most fascinating of America's founders helped define our national character.

Isaacson provides the full sweep of Franklin’s amazing life, showing how he helped to forge the American national identity and why he has a particular resonance in the twenty-first century.

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin:

The Original 1793 Edition

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written.

Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them. There are actual breaks in the narrative between the first three parts, but Part Three's narrative continues into Part Four without an authorial break. In the "Introduction" of the 1916 publication of the Autobiography, editor F. W. Pine wrote that Franklin's biography provided the "most remarkable of all the remarkable histories of our self-made men" with Franklin as the greatest exemplar.

Benjamin Franklin's Book of Virtues by Benjamin Franklin

Published in 1791 after his death, this smaller pull-out of Franklin's autobiography, shares Franklin's 13 virtues that he sought to work on in himself in efforts of self improvement. Reading Franklin's discussions of these virtues and their roles in "perfection" allows readers insights into Franklin's views, efforts, successes and motivations toward life success.

Poor Richard's Almanack by Benjamin Franklin

This reprinted version of Ben Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanack captures the book as it was in the late 1700's--filled with wit, wisdom, proverbs, jokes and hoaxes along with some annual calendars, weather and more typical almanac materials. Published originally under the pseudonym Richard Saunders, from 1732 to 1758, the original prints ran over 10,000 copies per year. This reprinted version compiles hundreds of pieces from many issues of the original publications.

The Way to Wealth by Benjamin Franklin

The first American book on personal finance, "The Way to Wealth" by Benjamin Franklin is still the best and wisest money book ever written. Originally published in 1758 as the preface to "Poor Richard's Almanack," this little gem has been through innumerable printings and sold millions of copies to those in search of smart but entertaining advice about hard work, earning and saving money and debt.

5 Ways to Budget for College Textbooks and Course Materials

Okay--we all know that college tuition and room and board are significant expenses for families! You may have the hefty costs of college worked into your budget or covered by scholarships. You may still be faced with some sticker shock when the lists of textbooks, study guides, supplemental materials, online program access codes, and an assortment of other necessary course materials roll in with the syllabi at the beginning of the semester! Here are five ways to fit college textbooks and course materials into your budget without breaking the bank!

Procrastinate on the Purchase.  I am not a fan of procrastination. I know that waiting to buy college textbooks and supplies can mean that used books are no longer available--but there is a method to my madness. A professor often decides to use only some of the books listed in their syllabus! Sometimes, they discover that a title is difficult to obtain or forget to mention that you can use an older (cheaper!) version of the book or an online version, etc. Some professors list several required texts on the course syllabus when, in reality, one text is needed, and the others are optional. We have had professors change the required textbook(s) during the first class meeting or via email in the days before class. Some digital items or books with special online access codes may not be returnable after purchase! Have your student wait until that first class meeting to ensure the books are necessary.

Visit the Campus Library.  While this won't work for online courseware or special digital items--it does work for good old, hard copies of textbooks. Take the syllabi to the campus library or your local community library and put holds or reserves on all the books you can for the semester! You may need to renew a book once or twice to finish the semester--but this is definitely a way to stretch your book budget a little further on books you don't intend to keep after the semester. This technique worked very well for my daughter's Shakespeare course. She could check out all six books required for the semester at our city library. It saved her about $100 over the semester on that course alone.

Don't Rule Out Borrowing a Little to Cover the Gap.  Student aid and loans don't always cover everything. I was one of those students who was always a little short after all the financial assistance was said and done. My parents could not help, and I was always a few hundred bucks short. I had a rich uncle (literally) who would lend me a few hundred dollars a semester to cover some of my fees. If you don't have a rich uncle, you may need to take an actual small, short-term loan so you can get the money you need to cover those last few books and course materials.

Comparison Shop for Every. Single. Book.  When I was in college, I had limited options:

  • Buy used in the campus book store.
  • Buy new from the campus book store.
  • Hit the library for copies.
  • Buy/borrow from a friend who had the book.

Today, the online world makes it super easy to find books online and shop around for the best price. Sometimes, we find that the college book store has the best price--sometimes Amazon--sometimes another random online, used book store or an independent seller online. It never hurts to scout out Facebook groups for your student's university, as there is usually a buy/sell group for books or a parent group listing a student's old text for sale too!

Set up a Savings Fund for Books.  Perhaps you already have grandparents, aunts, and uncles regularly donating to college savings accounts for your student's holidays and birthdays. If so, remember that you can use money from those college savings accounts for qualifying books and supplies. If you do not have an official college savings account, you can still set aside money regularly into a little savings fund earmarked for books. Setting aside just a little each week throughout the year can really take some of the sting out of a several hundred-dollar college textbook bill!

College is expensive--especially when you consider the extra and the add-ons--but there are ways to soften the blow without breaking the bank!

My Review

Great Way to Involve the Entire Family in a Project. This book offers an assortment of 50 projects, ranging from easy to difficult. This book is perfect for families seeking projects for multiple children with a wide age range. While most children will need parental guidance through most of the projects detailed--this is an excellent book for teens and middle school students to work and learn alongside younger siblings.

Awesome Kitchen Science Experiments for Kids Teaches Actual Science. The layout of this book is perfect for learning about the STEAM projects inside! Each project has a difficulty level, vocabulary words (with a glossary to define them), space to write observations, and learn about the scientific method and a breakdown of the hows and whys of each experiment. There are even extra suggestions to further learning or expand on the presented experience.

Would I recommend Awesome Kitchen Science Experiments for Kids by Dr. Megan Olivia Hall? All of my daughters attended STEM-focused schools--with my youngest daughter attending from Kindergarten. I LOVE the projects presented in this book! Each experiment is well organized--materials and objectives are explicit--and parents are made aware before choosing a project of the time needed to complete the project--and the dreaded mess involved! The experiments that we worked through went as planned according to the instructions. This book is an excellent resource for parents as you find creative ways to keep the kids learning at home!
